Umm 51 sec. I thought I did well but now I feel bad. To be fair, I found a stopwatch online so I was messing around with tabs and whatnot, so that added time.

About a minute and change. My mouse is screwy, and filling all the dots takes additional time. My actual time looking and solving was probably less.
#13: Alex Klages (metalfoot) on Dec 10, 2010
A little over a minute; watching Blue's Clues with the kids and my touchpad was being dodgy.

#21: Sarah Andrews (sarah) on Dec 10, 2010
between 1 and 2 minutes -- didn't have a second hand to watch. also, the pressure of being timed made me nervous so that probably slowed me down. lol
flying princess, pancakes sound good. maybe that's what I needed to do.

14 seconds... :)
Nice puzzle
#33: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Dec 10, 2010
even knowing what this is after doing it and restarting and trying to cheat by just filling everything in as fast as possible how can anyone even fill it in that way in 14 seconds let alone solving it the normal way on the first try?
#34: Jane Doe (telly) on Dec 10, 2010
43 seconds.
I re-cleared it for a second try and got 18 sec.
thanks for all the fun, fast, small puzzles.
#35: Jennie Bardsley (sunshower) on Dec 10, 2010
2 minutes 37 seconds (I obviously need more practice!)
#36: Angela Claire Hanes (hanesangie) on Dec 11, 2010
I think 90 seconds. I had to approximate since I don't have a second hand available. I agree with Jane. I like the fun, fast, small puzzles.

#48: henry shorr (shorrh) on Dec 13, 2010
46 seconds
#49: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Dec 14, 2010
To answer bugaboo... I filled in the colored spaces and then hit "save" to fill in the white spaces for me :)
#50: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Dec 14, 2010
Clever little feature. I wondered how you did it so fast.
#51: (Private) (Cyclone) on Dec 15, 2010
Ah, I didn't know one could do that. Sadly, mine didn't work out quite that way; I hit Save after filling the easy single reds, and the dots stayed out.
#52: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Dec 15, 2010
Cyclone, you have to have ALL the colored spaces completed before you hit Save or it won't work. :)
#53: Gator (Gator) on Dec 15, 2010
I can get down to 15 seconds, but only after solving it many times to know exactly where the reds and blacks go (without needing to look at the clues any more).
#54: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Dec 15, 2010
exactly
i dont know how on earth anyone could actually solve it for the first time that fast
#55: (Private) (Cyclone) on Dec 15, 2010
Alicia, I figured that out today on other puzzles. =)

So I've retried this one. I got under a minute, but didn't look after I was done. 15 seconds though? Man.
#56: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Dec 15, 2010
Alicia's a man?
#57: (Private) (Cyclone) on Dec 15, 2010

Took me about two minutes.

A lot of nonogram games have clocks built in, and rate you by how fast you are. Not putting a clock here, even as an option, was a conscious choice for me.

And not only because I'm rather slow.

First, the clock encourages (1) cheating, and (2) suspicion of cheating whenever people are legitimately fast. I feel like that would have a negative impact on the general culture of webpbn.

Second, the way to get good times is to guess instead of solve by strict logic. This puzzle, for example, is pretty easy to guess on, and a practiced guesser can certainly solve it extremely fast. That's OK if people want to solve puzzles that way, but I personally like the logical reasoning better. I enjoy the long discussions of how people found ways to solve difficult puzzles logically.

Third, I think it impacts puzzle design. A "hard" puzzle to speed solve is almost always one where the image is very random looking, so you can't guess by "picture logic". Sometimes "random looking" puzzles are brilliant bits of art that pop into meaningfulness only after you stare at them for a while (this one verges on that) but often they are just ugly and artless.

So while I think it's fun to do timed puzzles occasionally, it's not really my favorite variation on nonogram solving.

I do have one other trick I use when I'm trying to solve pbn puzzles fast: For lines like the one filled in column of this puzzle, I first fill in the entire column in black, then go back and change the parts that need to be red. That eliminates all the double clicks.

I'd also bet that the people with really fast times mostly have mice, not scratch pads.
#63: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on May 7, 2011
I think you are absolutely correct about putting timers on puzzles. This should not become a competition but rather stay a community of puzzle makers and solvers. I wasn't so interested in the time it takes people to solve puzzles (although 14 seconds is pretty amazing). I wanted to see if I could get many more people making comments. I think making comments and reading comments of others is part of what makes this a community and I like to do stuff to promote that. This site you have created is quite a gift and I always appreciate your insights, Jan. Thank you.
#64: Kayla Aldridge (KMA61290) on Sep 12, 2012
I finished it in 2 minutes and I deffinetly agree with the being faster with a mouse instead of the touch pad which is what I have and it does make it harder to do things fast especially when I have to watch where I slide my finger because my touch pad has the scoller on the right so if I touch that the page starts to scroll which takes more time to scroll back to where you were.
#65: Dave Oas (khpdave) on Dec 13, 2012
84 seconds (which I think sounds better than one minute and 24 seconds).

I would like to point out that while solving the puzzle I was washing dishes, our cat was clawing at my foot for food and I think my appendix may have ruptured midway in the solve (oh yeah, and I solved it using an iPhone).

Headed to the hospital - Thanks Brian!

Turns out it was just the fruitcake I had eaten - I'm good now. Thanks for your concern and thanks for letting me have a bunch of fun with your puzzle and its comments.

I was really curious what the puzzle would be so I didn't bother looking for a timer. (And I hate timing myself.) I estimate that it took me between 30 seconds and a minute. That seems to match up with everyone else's times too. It's within the curve.
#75: Devon McCarthy (RainbowStreak) on Jul 1, 2018

1:11, with a laptop. Of course, I doubt a good mouse would have increased my time by much...

This was fun!

25 seconds

This one is 6th. The puzzle with the most comments (148) is the puzzle about Atheist Day where nobody respected each other.

54 seconds :/

Nice description Joe, now I feel the need to go and see those comments :)
