In Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland the Playing Cards paint the roses red to try and please the Queen of Hearts.

at first i had no idea what this was

Well I didn't have the skill to do a half red rose and a paintbrush. It really does look like a church key now that you mention it though.

Haha, I knew it would be an Alice theme when I saw the title. Very original idea! I liked this puzzle a lot.
