I hope this is logically solvable -- when I tried to solve it myself, I had to guess a little, but my logic skills aren't very advanced. :) Anyone else?

that didnt help cuz i dont have any of the cells for a-g29.so the 3 can go anywhere from a to g which leaves 7 open cells . i dont know how to copy a pic of whats ive done so far. can someone tell me how to do it
#7: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 10, 2009 [HINT]
Try placing the 3 in the bottom 3 spaces of C29 (what you would call rows "e," "f," and "g") and you will see it doesn't work. Then keep moving up and you will find only one spot for that 3 to go.

That was nearly impossible, but fun! =)

I've gotten this far, but I cannot see a logical way forward. Someone please enlighten me...

That's about as far as I got, Gator. I spent LOTS of time trying to look at different kinds of logic to fill out the top half, and just could not find anything. I ended up guessing and backtracking in order to finish it. But then, my solving skills are not as good as yours and Adams and Jan's.

Sorry, folks -- I'm going to have to chalk this up as a puzzle that looked much better as an image in my head than it worked as a puzzle to solve. I published it because there are many on this site (Gator, Jan, Adam, and others) who are regularly able to solve puzzles that I can't, but this one just might not be able to be done with logic alone! Adam, Jane, or Tasha, can you clue us all in as to how you did it? :) Thanks much!
#13: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 16, 2009 [HINT]
I got to the same point as Gator. I even thought I had something going with this thought: Either C23R6 or C24R6 has to be black, or they could both be black (based on trying to place the 3's in each of those columns). But they can't both be dots. Unfortunately, it didn't help too much.

This will get you a little further. Look at the 5 clue in row 4. It has to go somewhere between columns 18-27. But notice if you try to put in on the left how this affects row 9. You have to put the 2 clue in row 9 somewhere in columns 19-22. So this makes the first available place the 5 clue can go is column 21. This allows you to fill in columns 23-25 on row 4.

I'll look at this more later.

I went back and double checked what I had against what you had. I didn't have a dot in C26R2 (and you did) but I had a dot in C9R4 (which you didn't). How did you get that dot in C26R2?

Anyway, I went back and tried to work through your comment #14. I followed you until the part about putting the 5 "on the left." On the left meaning starting at C18? If that's what you meant, I don't see why the 2 has to be between C19-22? Are you even referring to the 2nd 2 in that R4 anyway?
#16: Gator (Gator) on Nov 25, 2009 [HINT]
The dot in R2C26 is from two-way logic. Looking at the 2 clue in column 27, either R2C27 or R4C27 has to be filled in. Column 26 only needs a 1 clue to finish off that column. So if R2C27 is filled in, R2C26 will be a dot. If R4C27 is filled in, then R4C27 will be filled in and consequently R2C27 would have to be a dot.

Yes, starting at column 18. I'm referring to the 2 clue in row 9. In columns 20-22, you only have a 2 clue left in each one. So if the 5 clue in row 4 is in columns 20-22 (and they will be if the 5 clue starts in column 18 or 19, or 20), this will cause R9C20 - R9C22 to be dots which makes it impossible to fill in row 9. So as the 5 clue moves right, the first place that will not cause row 9 to be invalid is column 21.

I haven't had a chance to go back and work on this one yet, but I will eventually.

Gator, I am still waiting for you to "look at this more later."
#18: Gator (Gator) on Jan 4, 2010
I have "looked at it more later", but I haven't gotten any further. I "guess" it is time to give it up.

Found to require some guessing by Gator.
#20: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jan 4, 2010
Thank you. I would have been disappointed if you had ruled otherwise.

very nice simplistic image
i wish i didnt have to guess though
#22: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jul 19, 2012 [HINT]
from gator's image here is what i did (some might be a duplicate of later comments, which i didn't read before i started keeping track of my moves):

- IEL: if 5 in R4 starts left of C21, it violates R9. this makes C23-25R4 black
- LL
- the black at C10R4 must now be one of the 1's in R4, dot either side of it. (this step may not be necessary, just interesting)
- EL the 3 in C24, dots C24R6
- LL to finish

...i must have messed up somewhere. i should resolve to be sure, but can't bring myself to do it right now.
#23: Gator (gator) on Jul 19, 2012 [HINT]
My R5C26 is not a dot, so "EL the 3 in C24, dots C24R6" would not work.
