Some edge logic is required.
#2: Shae (shaekin) on May 4, 2009 [HINT]
Once you have figured out you need edge logic though it's pretty quick from there on.

Ditto #2.

I agree Shae. Edge logic is needed almost from the get-go. I think I filled in 2 or 3 squares before I had to go with trial and error. I chose to go from the top...and if memory serves me rightly, that was all that was needed. Once I figured out 5 of the 6 squares (took more than one trial) the rest fell into place. I enjoyed it!

Congratualtions, zandperl. You are moving up in the world.

Found to be logically solvable by jan.

This is a first rate puzzle. A nice image, and really delightful to solve. It must have taken a lot of work to get it working so nicely. Great job!

It took me about 3 hours if I remember correctly. This was made without a "solution checker". So, it was - create the puzzle, try to solve, make adjustments, rinse and repeat.

Yeah, I remember how much work this was before we had those tools.

But even the "checker" and "helper" don't do the whole job for you when you are working on puzzles of this level of difficulty. You still need to do a lot of manual solving. The checker will filter out the versions with multiple solutions, and he helper will do the easy parts of the puzzle for you, but you still need to do the hard parts manually.

Really, manual solving will always be a part of good puzzle design.

Brilliant! Thanks!

A fun challenge, thank you.
#13: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 9, 2009 [HINT]
Very fun to solve. It took me a while though because I messed up with the edge logic on the bottom and had to start over, but then it solved nicely. At first it looked like a snowman with a carrot nose, then I saw the intended image. Nice!

First of all, I like the subject matter (duh). This was a fun puzzle to solve because finding the solution took me way out of my comfort level for solving. Typically, I look for the cells that must be filled in because of line length and then work backwards from those as to what combinations must or cannot work. The only way I was able to solve this puzzle was using what I understand to be edge logic, working from the top and the bottom. It worked so I must've done it right but what a challenge!

like the bird

I like the bird. He is definitely fluffed up.

I was pleased with the 5 in the bottom row. It seems that 99% of clues that can have edge logic used on them end up straddled among two clues (like the 6 in row one). When placing the 5, I saw that it could go from c4-c12. I thought it would be cool if it went all the way to the left. I really didn't expect it to go to the right.

I guess this is like when musicians say a piece is "amusing".

I finally understand what "edge logic" means! Thanks for a puzzle thaat makes it clear.
#21: Gator (gator) on Apr 30, 2012 [HINT]
Thanks gail and I'm glad it helped you to understand edge logic. :)
