That was challenging! I thought it was fire until the very end.
#3: Jay Berius (jber101) on Mar 11, 2008
Good puzzle...quite difficult yet rewarding
#4: JoDeen Mozena (Ozymoe) on Mar 12, 2008
I am probabably your worst nightmare rating-wise. I think the quality is poor at best and it requires "trial and error" to solve it (so I rated it "very hard")...and yet it is one of the most satisfying puzzles I have done in the past month. I mean that. It is difficult, but small enough to be comfortably solved. I loved it! Thank you!
#5: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Mar 12, 2008
took a little concentration..guess I should have done it in the morning instead of right before bed :)
it was a nice change to have to use my noggin!
#6: Jan Wolter (jan) on Mar 14, 2008
I don't think "trial and error" are required to solve this. It does require spotting a lot of subtle things and maybe some edge logic. Nice puzzle.
#7: Lisa Swomley (twizzler) on Mar 14, 2008
I didn't use "trial and error". I just cheated. Guess I'm dumber than most pople on here, even though my IQ is 135. Super smart people on this site.
#8: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Mar 14, 2008
hey, your IQ is up there close to my sons, congratulations! It is a gift & a curse..

Since I'm supposed to be the one making final rulings about which puzzle are "logically solvable", I kind of have to resist the temptation to guess. Instead I just get stuck on a lot of puzzles. I need to find a way to distribute that task.
#10: julius nadas (jnadas) on Mar 15, 2008 [HINT]
I guess I am not all that good with the edge logic, even though I have read the tutorials on it. The puzzle can be solved with single line logic as long as you can determine that any ONE of these squares is filled in: (6,20) or (7,20) or (8,20)

I just don't see how edge logic can be used to give you any one of these.
#11: Arduinna (arduinna) on Mar 16, 2008 [HINT]
There seem to be lots of places where there is only one not-so-obvious step to move forward. I did use edge logic a few times, but it was very simple edge logic. For instance, at one point, you need both of the 8s on the two far right columns. So, the one on the farthest right cannot cross the 1 in the row that is 6th from the top. Eliminate down to there, and you can solve a big chunk of it.

Nice picture too, by the way. I rated this one high. It was fun to solve, challenging-but-solvable, and rewarding in the end.

Wow, what an excellent puzzle, I was almost tempted to get a bit of help but I stuck with it and solved it, plus I didn't work out what it was till the very end, loved it, thanks :)
#15: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jun 8, 2008 [HINT]
Edge logic helps, but you still have to guess, at least in one spot. I was tempted to cheat, too. Just to get a spot or two. Quality was very high, especially for a small puzzle. Difficulty was very high for a 20 x 20. Worth it!

Difficult but rewarding ... didn't peek at the solution but was very close to it.
8s on the right did it for me.
#18: Twillis (twillis) on Jan 26, 2009
I didn't find that guessing was required, though it took me a while to catch on to all of the logic needed.

Challenging and fun puzzle.
#19: Byrdie (byrdie) on Oct 31, 2009
I had a real difficult time with this one.
#20: Jan Wolter (jan) on Nov 10, 2009
This puzzle is one of the ones that I used as a sample puzzle in my Survey of Paint-by-Number Puzzle Solvers as an example of a small and moderately challenging puzzle. I don't think Marcus comes around here much anymore, but if he does, I wonder if he'd grant permission for this puzzle to be redistributed as part of a collection of puzzles for testing solving programs.

No guessing. Fun puzzle. I have been revisiting some I hadn't solved previously.
#25: August Hisnay (mrbrathaus) on Sep 30, 2012
Have just been getting into these puzzles and I am impressed with myself for solving this one, haha. No guessing required.
#26: Deborah Eater (cricketswool) on Jan 11, 2019
Top-notch puzzle and a really fun solve.
#27: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Apr 30, 2019
This is excellent. Fun puzzle with an image that pops.
#28: derby (Derby) on May 2, 2019
Agree with Adam. Excellent image for a small puzzle. I also had to do a little trail and error. But the puzzle was worth it,

Amazing puzzle!
#30: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Jan 27, 2021
Here I am twelve years later...and how time changes things! Wow! With the perspective of all these years of solving, I can really appreciate this puzzle now. The image is wonderful. I was so new to webpbn at the time, my comments above were regrettably very green, lol. I found the puzzle much easier to solve this time around, though still challenging enough to be interesting. It's a gem!

What I called "trial and error" then, I came to learn was "edge logic," and of course is one of the tools we use to solve puzzles.

Great, unexpected image. Fun.
#32: Michael Eddy (meddy) on Apr 26, 2023
Great puzzle!
#33: Jill Tallmer (Yidl) on Apr 27, 2023
I had to use trial and error also at one point, but still enjoyed the feeling of seeing the image emerge.
