Puzzle Description:

When one of these beasties sneaks up behind you while scuba diving

I used smile logic on the "smile." There are two fish in the Pacific NW that look similar, but only one is so curious it silently looks over your shoulder, and scares the bejeezus out of you when you sense its presence. Yummy, too. The other, you will find in crevices. See if you can guess.

Here's the crevice dweller.

#6: Nancy (nbarsi) on Dec 31, 2011
Oh my, what a perfect image, amazing.
#7: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 31, 2011 [SPOILER]
That WOULD be scary! I'm going to guess eel as well. Because they open and close their mouths all the time (for respiration). I don't know if eel meat is yummy because I've never tasted it. I think I would probably prefer cod.
#8: Tom King (sgusa) on Dec 31, 2011 [SPOILER]
Ling cod are the inquisitive fish. Tasty, too. Wolf eels are the crevice dwellers. They are not really eels.
#9: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Dec 31, 2011 [SPOILER]
It looked like a turtle head to me. :)
#10: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Dec 31, 2011
turtle heads are in and of themselves something completely different, if you know what i mean
haha!

Very scary but you wouldn't find me down there with them anyway. Great puzzle
#12: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Jan 1, 2012 [SPOILER]
This totally looks like a Spomgebob Squarepants clam to me...but they don't do too much sneaking up...
#13: Robin (3rdgal12) on Jan 2, 2012
I loved this one!

Kind of reminds me of an unnerving run in I had with an Ulua once.

Here's a little bit about the ulua for those interested...scroll down and read after the boat picture halfway down:

Thanks for the article, David. I sold some baseball equipment to a Padre who taught in the Northwestern Island. I didn't know people even lived there.
#16: Tom King (sgusa) on Jan 7, 2012
Reading some more, it must have been Tern Island. It wasn't Midway or Niihau.

Found to be logically solvable by gator.
