not sure if anyone has tried this, so i thought i would experiment. the idea being that i try to create a black and white and grey final image. when creating the puzzle i left "white" what i wanted to have grey (because they would have small dots in them in the final solve) and use a color where i wanted white and then instruct the solver to convert that color to blank for the white.

i thought this might be an interesting way to anti-alias and/or create shadows and other effects that aren't possible with such bright colors in the available palette.

end result? i'm not real happy with it. there just isn't as much contrast between the (now) blank squares and the dotted squares. in the end, it is a complicated and at times frustrating way to create a puzzle (not being able to actually see what the results will look like as you go) and it is extra work for the solver. not enough bang for the buck for me.

i went ahead and posted it because i thought it was interesting...both the concept and even the final image with the blue (a bit warhol-y). also, i'm sure that others could use the process to much better effect if they so desired. just releasing one of my failed experiments into the wild.

really cool image
it was a neat idea to experiment with the possible gray shading (that unfortunately didnt show up as nicely contrasted as you had hoped)
at first i saw nothing (maybe a strange map or something) and then i suddenly saw the large face looking in right profile

is it you?

Nice effect. It is a shame we don't have grey. :)

Yeah, he played when I was there as well. I had friends with his poster their walls. :)

Handsome, both David Garza and the image. Thanks!
I went ahead and removed all the blue, except the one in the background and I like the effect, nice experiment! Perhaps we don't need gray as much as the ability to make the dot a bit bigger.

Like a setting in the preferences for diameter of blanking dot?
#12: Jota (jota) on May 4, 2012
Yes something like that, would look gray, I think!
#13: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on May 4, 2012
It definitely would, if the dot filled a third to a half of the square.

i think experiments are important...gooo for it David :)

David,

I thought your experiment was a great idea.

Actually, I liked it with the blue - that really made an interesting contrast and didn't really detract from the image. Like bugaboo, I experienced that wonderful moment when, while looking at the partially finished puzzle, the image suddenly jumped out. I love it when that happens.

Everything about this puzzle was excellent IMHO, including the subject. :-)

I thought the effect was great. You have to have your settings so that unsolved squares are grey and blank squares are white. If you have it set so that unsolved squares are white and blank squares have a dot you can't really tell what it is. But I think it looks great.

thanks kathryn. glad you liked it :)
