Puzzle Description:
"Baby's First Caress" by Mary Cassatt. Baby holds Mother's chin as she kisses his hand.
#1: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on May 5, 2011 [SPOILER]
In honor of Mother's Day, this should win. Nobody (but nobody) could paint mothers and children like Mary Cassatt, and I'm bringing beautiful art to the people.#2: bugaboo (bugaboo) on May 5, 2011

great image#3: Wombat (wombatilim) on May 5, 2011 [HINT]
line and color logic solves about 90% of this
then i dont know if i logically solved the last little bit (the babys arm) or not without looking ahead more than a couple steps
After line & color logic, I examined C12 and could eliminate all but 2 possibilities for C11 (either of the possibilites for C12 will use a black square in C11, so the remaining squares in C11 are white).#4: bugaboo (bugaboo) on May 5, 2011 [HINT]
From here I looked at the possibilities for the final black square in the 7 in R29. I eventually figured out it belongs in R6, but it takes about 4 moves to find a contradiction, which is over our standard threshold for "look-ahead," and I wasn't able to find a quicker path to a contradiction for any of the remaining options, so I have marked this as "some guessing." It's possible there was something I overlooked, however.
i got it#5: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on May 6, 2011
look at the black 2 clue in row 24
it will either go in columns 13/14 or columns 14/15 (column 14 already has 3 out of the 4 black pixels filled in)
no matter where that 2 goes (into either column 13 or column 15) the 1 clue in row 26 will also go in that same column
this means you can put a dot in columns 12, 14 (the only one you actually need), and 16
then it solves out with line logic
no guessing
Beautiful picture and sentiment Kristen.#6: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 6, 2011
great pic, Kristen,,, was solveable for me#7: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on May 6, 2011 [HINT]
Once color logic is completed on the blue (the last 4 squares are tricky, until you see that the only spot for the blue in R18 is in C15), row 17 solves with a bit of back & forth elimination. Column 20 solves, leaving only one solution for C19. The remaining black solves easily from there.#8: Kadou (Kadou) on May 6, 2011 [HINT]
I think I solved it with line and color logic only.#9: Jota (jota) on May 6, 2011
BTW, Happy Mother's day!
Thanks for a wonderful entry!!!#10: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on May 6, 2011
Happy mother's day everyone!
Beautiful. Thank you Jota!#11: Gator (Gator) on May 9, 2011 [HINT]
I used the two-way logic that bugaboo described in #4. Nice puzzle.#12: Web Paint-By-Number Robot (webpbn) on May 9, 2011
Found to be logically solvable by Gator.#13: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on May 9, 2011
very beautiful image.#14: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on May 9, 2011
Thanks! It took a lot of cropping and fiddling to get a good image in a 30x30.#15: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 9, 2011
Kristen, you did a fantastic job with this one. It's really amazing how you captured the essence of the original.#16: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 15, 2011
The solve was VERY challenging for me, but quite rewarding too. :-)
congrats Kristen..... perfect time to make this puzzle :)#17: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 15, 2011
Congratulations, Kristen. I really thought this one was a First Place puzzle.#18: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on May 16, 2011

My earlier link appears to have a virus attached, so I replaced it with this one: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=8574#22: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Apr 7, 2018
Fun solve. I love that painting but while I saw the baby, I didn't see the hand until I read the story. Tough image to do in so small a puzzle. Good job.
