An interesting note: Honorary members of the AdAmAn Club included Roald Amundsen (leader of the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Pole) and Sir Edmund Hillary (who along with Tenzing Norgay, was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest). Another interesting note: In the 1920's, my grandfather (who was not a member of the AdAmAn Club), decided to beat them to the top. He hiked for hours in the freezing snow and actually did beat them there. When they reached the summit, they found my grandfather half frozen in the caretaker's cottage. They quickly lit a fire to thaw him out, gave him some food and drink to bring him around and admonished him never to do anything that foolish again! Here's the AdAmAn Club's website: http://www.adaman.org/Home.aspx

Wow - what a fun puzzle! Beautiful image and interesting story. I did a mountain hike in freezing weather... once. Never again. Give me a good book, a cup of cocoa and a blanket in a chair next to the fireplace any day. :-)

Linda, how old was your grandfather when he took on this great adventure? I wonder if he thought at the time, "This will be a great story to tell my grandchildren."

hi teresa! thank you very much for the comment :-) i'll take the fireplace over the freeze any day! my grandfather was in his 20's when he hiked up pikes peak on new year's eve. he was also an olympic contender (mile run, belgium olympics) and he often hiked up the peak for training. guess what? this is the first time since the advent of the adaman club that the group wasn't able to make it to the summit. way too cold, brutal winds, and frostbite. no fireworks this year :-( oh, well - better luck next time!
