This is a very difficult puzzle. I know this is going to get a question mark right away, so I went ahead and made a tutorial.
The logic to solve it is at http://infrapinklizzard.deviantart.com/art/Logic-10592-Cheese-182044571 (click on the long skinny white strip to expand the tutorial).

My brain is just about broken.

Knowing you would probably not make a puzzle that was not solvable, I checked for hints. I had to resort to looking at the tutorial for the only intractable sticking point I got to, which was helped out by your fourth grid from the bottom (the 3 in c5, and I was annoyed that I hadn't seen it!) After that, I was able to do it on my own (I almost got stuck once more, but I test-pixeled my way past the 2 and the 3 in c7. That one was really, really tricky).

I am sitting in a recliner looking out the window over a beautiful autumnal lake right now; otherwise, I might have thrown my laptop across the room about half an hour or so ago. :D

i agree with number 4

i also got stuck a few times and resorted to the tutorial

some of those "logical" steps were bordering on being questionable

overall great puzzle

i just realized that i can see a ghost/astronaut type figure
in fact i see megaman if you cover up wallaces mouth!

Oh my gosh! I was determined to solve this one without looking at the tutorial. I would get stuck and just kept looking for possible edge logic. Once I would mark a pixel, I could move several steps along, then get stuck again. But it wasn't until almost the very end that I just couldn't see ANY edge logic at all. Then I had to take a peek. It was what you called "pseudo edge logic" on your last hint. Dang! I would not have been able to think ahead that far in my head.

Well, I impressed myself by getting as far as I did. This sure was fun to work on, and I love the image. Thanks for a tough challenge, Joe.

Thanks, Liz and Teresa. I'm glad you could make it to the next-to-last step without hints. (My logic can't be too way-out, then.)

Teresa, I don't see the last step as looking ahead very far. I illustrate my thought processes in different colors based on the steps I use. So the pink in this picture is the first step. All the pink is one idea. "If the 2 and 3 go all the way up, then this space must be white" (ie c8r9). Then the green is the second idea. "Then the 5 must go up -- but then it conflicts with the 2 already up there."

So I see this as only two steps. (And fairly straightforward as edge logic if you consider the 2,3 together rather than the usual one-number-at-a-time.)

I was more afraid people would complain about my hint before that with the spaghetti arrows where I got lazy instead of illustrating it more thoroughly.

And thanks bugaboo, but would you point out the steps you found questionable so I can maybe explain them more clearly?

solved!!!
after some reverts... really hard but solvable

Congratulations, Vaggelis. This is my second hardest puzzle by popular ranking. Less than 1 in 8 finish it. The one ranked hardest actually has a higher proportion who finished - 14%.

I could solve with logic. Although some lines were intuitive, others weren’t, which made it all the more enjoyable. Very good puzzle. Thanks
