Well done - from the other perspective (I'm a teacher) exams are not actually any fun for me either.

It has been a long time since I wrote an exam (other than for work) but I remember like it was yesterday how it felt and this picture just about sums it up!

I have the vague impression that "writing an exam" vs "taking an exam" and the tendency to talk about them in the plural as in "exams week" versus "exam week" are all British usage patterns as opposed to the American usage bugaboo is accustomed to, which probably carry over to English speakers all over Europe.

When I was teaching, I always found constructing an exam to be quite an interesting challenge. The exam should cover enough of the core material of the class to be a good assessment of the student's success in absorbing the essentials. It should contain easy questions that should be answerable by anyone who has occasionally attended class or cracked a book, and some difficult questions that are somewhat beyond the scope of the course, and everything in between, so that it spreads the students broadly across the grade spectrum in a way that actually reflects their knowledge of the course material. A well made exam is a work of art.

Administering an exam is a delight too. When I was a student, the U of M Engineering Honor code required professors to leave the room, but when I taught no such law applied, and I was required to sit in the classroom watching the students take the exam. Sitting in a room full of hard working busy people, just watching, is very pleasant and relaxing. A thoughtful person could do worse than getting a full time job as an exam monitor.

Grading exams is, on the other hand, an absolute horror. Final exams especially usually need to be graded very fast, and figuring out how to evaluate all the different levels of incomprehension is baffling, and depressing. Depressing because each failed student is a failure of the teacher as well.

dont feel bad about all failing students tho
lots of times students dont apply themselves and do nothing to try and learn the material despite a teachers best efforts
