Puzzle Description:

#1: Wombat (wombatilim) on Jun 17, 2010 [HINT]

This image is adorable.

I was able to solve this logically, but I'm at a loss to explain the logic used without either involving symmetry or going about 3 steps ahead. If you assume symmetry, it only takes 1 step ahead to place row 16, then 14 & 15 finish up with extended smile logic.

My ACTUAL thought process was "If 14 & 15 use smile logic, 16 has to be THERE."

all you have to do is simple internal edge on the two 9 clues eliminating the lowest possible row they could be in which was row 15 and then it solves easily
no guessing and no needing to solve via symmetry
i am having a hard time seeing a bird tho
maybe thats why it is a really strange one

I basically used the same kind of approach, but I used edge logic on the 7 clue in row 15 to see that R15C6 and R15C16 had to be blanks. Nice puzzle.
