holy crap. requires NO guessing. two move look-ahead TWICE for the whole puzzle...if i remember correctly. it's only been available for an hour...just because it might take longer than that for you (does for me too!) doesn't mean you had to resort to guessing. ...*sigh* the little red question mark is a lie.

It took awhile but I finally got it. I don't think I guessed at all but made some wrong moves along the way. Nice image.

Thank you. I'm working back through trying to solve it with as little advanced logic as possible and noting where I do anything other than line logic. So far three one-row-deep edge-logics....continuing on.

Found to be logically solvable by Gator.
#5: Gator (Gator) on Jun 8, 2010 [HINT]
Took me a while, but it solves out. I did not keep track of all the places that I used edge logic, but I had to use it 3 times I believe. Very nice puzzle!

excellent image
excellent logical solve
#7: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jun 9, 2010 [HINT]
aside from line logic...here were the only other logic types i needed:

- edge logic on right side ...one row
deep to start "7" and second "5"
- edge logic on the top "3" in R13
and then repeated in R14
- edge/staggered-smile for the last
four blacks

Thanks for a very interesting puzzle. And the answer to the weird question is?
#9: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 9, 2010
thanks for your great entry, David
#10: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jun 10, 2010
my answer to that question is: "as many as would want"
#11: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 10, 2010
i'd like to see 3 of em, david
#12: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jun 10, 2010 [HINT]
Truly awesome puzzle, David. I love the image and I love your answer to the question.

Now I have a question for Jota and Tom: Were you able to solve this one logically without any guessing or peeking? I was able to figure out some of the inner edge logic, but not all of it. I had to resort to guessing.
#13: Gator (Gator) on Jun 10, 2010 [HINT]
This is how I did it.

About 35% of the way through, I used edge logic with the 2 clue in row 2. With this I was able to make R2C13-R2C15 dots. More line logic.

The next part was to look were the upper 7 clue (as the lower one is already accounted for) in column 30 could go. By looking at the other clues in the column, we see it can start in row 9 and go as low as row 22. Now we look at how this affects column 29 if we try to place the 7 clue. We know if cannot be at R22C30 as placing it in R16-22 makes C29 invalid. Note that we cannot dot R22C30 though as it could be part of the 5 clue. Looking at placing it in R9-15, we know the 7 clue cannot be in R9C30 or R10C30. We are now restricted to R11-21 for the 7 clue. This lets us make R15C30-R17C30 black. More line logic.

The same kind of logic can be applied to the 5 clue (between the two 7s) in column 30. Using edge logic, you can see that it cannot be in R19-21. So it can be in R22-28. This lets us make R24C30-R26C30 black. A lot more line logic.

The puzzle is now almost done except rows 6, 8, and 10. Simple edge logic lets you dot R8C22. The rest can then be finished out.

teresa: i had problems with it before he revised it...then i was okay
#15: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jun 10, 2010
...it has not been revised since it was made public.
#16: Jota (jota) on Jun 11, 2010
I went thru w/o problems.
#17: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 11, 2010
David: i worked on the puzzle for over 2 hours, took a break and...came back and had red dots on every column & row when i came back ....i even had to ask Jota how to find the puzzle again, cause it left my save file ...thats the story ...... then i had no problems
#18: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jun 11, 2010
site glitch? not sure. i created it in the corner of a huge grid. once i got it solvable, i recreated it dot for dot on the correct size grid and published it. shouldn't have been edited since. that's actually why it showed that i had not solved it at first.
#19: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 11, 2010
okay... thx 4 explanation David

congrats on your win, David
you deserved it
#22: Jane Doe (telly) on Jun 13, 2010
that was tough! I'm with Teresa on this one. I think I did some very deep edge logic to get this one...I didn't look at your hints, Gater, that probably would have helped me. So maybe I missed something since so many of you did it without having to go 4-5 steps ahead...

Nice image and creativity :)
