WHAT!?! Your mom let you pick up a steak knife? She let you know where they were? AND they were in reach? And where the heck did you get the idea to open an orange with a steak knife in the first place?#7: Corey Beaudoin (red) on Jan 9, 2010
I'm in shock :D
The steak knifes were with the other utensls.#8: Fran (rmm) on Jan 9, 2010
As for the idea. My dad had tools in the garage. One was a hand saw that has teeth, and cuts stuff. The steak knife also has teeth and through careful observation at dinnertime, cuts suff.
This was either 1990 or 1991 so parenting mindesets were a little different then they are today.
By the way, she was also on the phone and in the same room when I did it. I'm sure some of you parents out there can agree that it is extremely difficult to watch your children 24/7.
I don't see how any time-period is acceptable to leave steak knives in a child's reach.#9: Barb Edwards (babarann) on Jan 9, 2010 [SPOILER]

Parents have gotten more protective over the years. Stuff that parents let kids do in the past, most parents wouldn't even dream of letting thier kids do today.#11: Jodi Olson (Jodi145) on Mar 23, 2010
I also believe that in some cases like this, it is easier to learn a lesson. This is one case, I was more careful with steak knives afterwards. Although I was much older when I used them again. Too scared to use them after this happened.
In my house the knives have always been in easy reach. I knew where they were. But my father was a chef, he made the rules for knife safety very clear. For example, use the right knife for the job, if you don't know what that is ask someone who does. And you never use long knives for hand held work...#12: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Aug 12, 2010
