OK I swear this one is logically solvable. If you get stuck, look at the possible situations for the bottom two columns. No matter how you slice it, R9C2 and R10C2 must be filled, and R9C3/R10C3 must be dots.

Still stumped? Remember that you can 'eliminate' the bottom '1' from columns 4-9, since you know they will somehow fit that checkered battered in the bottom two rows. Good luck!

Agree that it's logically solvable just as described in the hint. I really love a puzzle like this.

I got it straight away - but don't know if I just took a lucky guess on the first line I did. :)

good point, Martin. I suppose I can always add (skill builder) to the title in the future, so people have the heads up.

Exciting puzzle. :)

I used summing on the bottom two rows.
There are 8 black pixels in r9-10.
The 2s in c2&3 cannot be next to each other because all the horizontal clues are 1s.
So there can only be 2 black pixels in c2-3,r9-10.
That leaves 6 pixels for c4-9,r9-10.

And that means that the bottom 1 in each column 4-9 *must be* in r9 or 10.

Keeping that in mind, it solves with line logic. (Starting with c4 where r1-2 and 5-8 can be dotted.)

I really like the logical solve here!

I found a more roundabout way than Joe--I saw that there were restrictions on the bottom 2 rows but went looking in a less efficient place.

After filling row 3, I looked at c3. You can't place a black square in r10, as then you don't have room for the checkerboard to the right. So then c2R10 is a black square.

If c2r7 is black, we can't fill the 2 in c3. So c2r7 as a dot lets us fill in the 3 left rows.

Now with c4r4 black and one of c4(r9 or r10) black, we can white out other cells, enough to fill r5.

Setting c9r1/2 to black means c6 has dots down to r4 and this can't place all its 1's.

For me this was a tuffy! Whew...my brain is a little tired. Lol!
