This can be solved logically. You can eventually use edge logic to prove that the 3's and 4's in the outer columns can't be in the upper part of the puzzle. This narrows things down enough so the "1 9 1" row mostly solves and lets you do the rest of the puzzle. It's fairly tricky but good fun. I liked the final image too.
