i couldnt solve this

after initial ll:
el the 4 clue in c20 to dot r3-8 and r15-20
ll
iel the 4 clue in r4 to dot c12-14
ll
iel the 6 clue in r13 to dot c2
now el the 3 clue in c2 to dot r12 and r14
iel again the 6 clue in r13 to dot c3
ll
stuck - this may be logically solvable but i gave up for now

i purposely didnt post several other minor el steps that yielded no significant help

You are where I am at, Bug.
#9: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Nov 25, 2012
i have 3 black pixels tho, not 2
#10: Tom King (sgusa) on Nov 25, 2012
Ahead of me Bug. I don't know if that is more patience or brains...lol
#11: Tom King (sgusa) on Nov 25, 2012
Sorry, I got three, too. 2 in c20 and one somewhere in the middle, the long string places one in the 4 clue. We are tied ;)

Did you guys do EL is the lower left corner? I started with EL there and on the right edge to get going.

thats how i designed it (smile logic) so I guess this one won't make it ... thx for trying tom
#16: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Nov 25, 2012
it is NOT smile logic as the remaining two pixels of the 4 clue in c20 could both extend up into 9-10 or both down into r13-14
if you choose the "up" direction you can do a little line logic and then you will be stuck again without encountering an error, giving you the possibility of a corrct solution at that point but not knowing for sure
if you choose the "down" direction you can continue to solve for quite some time before encountering an error

like i said bugaboo... I thought it was...will look at other smile logic puzzles to see the difference

Found to require some guessing by infrapinklizzard.

AS Bugaboo said, this is not smile logic. It is a common misconception.

The real smile logic relies on edge logic with only one pixel left in each crossing line. Then crowding is used to show that the clue cannot go all the way to one side or the other.

Jan made a very good explanation of this on the Advanced Solving page. https://webpbn.com/index.cgi?page=solving.html

Note that the reason that this is not smile logic is because the clues leave too much leeway. As bugaboo said, it can go all the way to either side without a conflict any time soon. This kind of pattern often shows up in puzzles, and it often turns into a smile-like shape, but it also sometimes doesn't. Therefore using this pattern is smile-guessing.

I realize that this puzzle is 6 years old and people who have posted have advanced their solving skills, so this is not pointed at anyone in particular. However, there are still instances of smile-guessing being put forward as "logic".
