Comments on Puzzle #17656: What makes for a great puzzle?
By Aldege Cholette (Aldege)

peek at solution       solve puzzle
quality:   difficulty:   solvability: line logic only

Puzzle Description:

For some it's a B&W,others no more than a 20x20. If it's a 20x20 B&W even better, and if it's a challenging and fun solve with a clear image and solvable by logic alone, well that's just the cats meow. However, for Aldège if it has anything to do with a car, well we all know the answer to that one, lol. This is a close up of the hood of a 1953 Pontiac Cheiftain sedan,it has an 8 in the center(signifies V8),3 chrome strips on either side of the 8,and the indian head hood ornament that use to be used by Pontiac,so is this a great puzzle? It doesn't matter,i had fun making it.:)

Well, since i've never seen a 1953 Pontiac, I'm one of those who really liked to solve it :) Thanks.

Thx Avgvstvs,i'm glad it was fun to solve.:)

It seems to be a little girl in feety-pajamas pretending to be CAPTAIN EIGHT with streamers on her arms to be the cape.

And a good solve.

So it does Joe,now i didn't even see that before i published it. I'm sure someone else will see something else and once we hear what they say,we'll see it too. That's what i love about these puzzles,it just adds to my fun. I'm glad it was a good solve. Thx Joe.

I saw a mop for most of the solve, but I can totally see the little girl with really long tassels on her sleeves!

The solve progressed superbly...nice image, needed the explanation but had no doubt the explanation would be worth the wait.

You asked what makes a great puzzle? I don't know. For me: B&W 20x I certainly solve every time they are presented. LLS defined as such immediately (in the title). Sometimes a puzzle within a puzzle. I am not artistic, and though I like artistic puzzles, difficulty is more important to me.

Thx David,i suppose if you have no idea what the hood of a 53 Pontiac looks like the image might look like a little girl with long tassels or streamers, but if you are familiar with the car then it looks like,um ...a little girl with long tassels or streamers, lol. The solve and keeping it at a 20x20 B&W that was solvable by logic alone was my main goal,i'm so glad you enjoyed it David.:)

Thx Tom,problem is that what is difficult for one is child's play for another. I see a lot of puzzles that are rated a 2 or 2.5 for difficulty and the comments are saying what a great solve or challenging solve they were, yet that's still below average for difficulty, yet a lot of people will get scared away if it's rated 3 or higher. I just hope people will at least peek if they're intimidated or disinterested in a puzzle. I can't tell you how many times i've been pleasantly surprised by the images or cleverness of peoples puzzles, not to mention the great comments which can be fun.:)

If I see an overly large puzzle, I'll check the rating and the number of comments. Anything close to 1,1 won't be worth my time, but a puzzle with 14 comments is sure to be interesting!

there is ALWAYS a dot or black pixel to be found without having to use anything but line logic
keep looking
#15: Kristen (cachedans) on Feb 25, 2012
that was a lot of fun to solve!
#16: Tom King (sgusa) on Feb 25, 2012
Aldege, I always try line logic, and if it is defined LLS in the title, I won't succumb to attempting other logic. I thought this was LLS, so didn't attempt anything else. My advice would be to put LLS in the title. I think this is a great puzzle. Now I am preaching to the choir. Don't worry about difficulty rankings. I gave it a 3.
#17: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Feb 25, 2012
thx Kristen,i'm glad you liked it.:)

Tom for me to know it's LLS i would have to try solving it,wouldn't i? I just keep editng until it says it's solvable by logic alone. Thx for saying it's a great puzzle, glad you enjoyed it.:)
#18: Tom King (sgusa) on Feb 25, 2012
I solve all of mine to prove them. I didn't know you only did LLS puzzles.

I really enjoyed this puzzle which I happened to find by searching for "puzzles I have not saved a solution for", "20x20", "2 colors", sorted by highest difficulty. So, yeah, I really like these kinds of puzzles.

Thx Gator.:)

Since it's been 10 years since the last comment, I had to speak up. Yes, I have a a hard time distinguishing the image for what it's supposed to be, but that's not unusual for me with Aldege's puzzles. I also very much enjoy solving them!
