Puzzle Description:

...this puzzle follows the TMC Standard.

...that would be the Teresa Mathemacality Criteria.
#2: Nancy (nbarsi) on Jan 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
My guess would have been 3..but according to the TMC standard ...I will not venture a guess.

i feel i should explain. in a similar (next in the series) puzzle by Teresa (#16986), she responded to some questions seeking hints with these three answers:

1. It is not mathematical like the IQ test series, but
it is mathematical in that the next in the series is a
number. It is more of a sequence than a series. The
numbers are representative of something that has a
mathematical basis but that no one really thinks of as
mathematical. Are you confused yet?

2. I would say no special expertise is needed (as in
only someone with a certain expertise would be able to
solve it), but others might argue otherwise. I would
say what is needed is common knowledge about a specific
subject, everybody knows it, so anyone can figure it out.

3. No, it is nothing as complicated as that. As in most
puzzles like this, you will say, "Oh yeah, I get it now,"
and then you will be able to provide the next several
numbers in the sequence.

they are what i was jokingly referring to as the Teresa Mathemacality Criteria because i have referred to them before in another puzzle. this one is slightly different in that people generally do think of this subject as "math"...of sorts.

glad you ventured a guess nancy, i'm sure future revisions of the TMC will actually explicitly promote venturing a guess ;)

I love the TMC theory, but I can't venture a guess at this juncture. (Cue the Dana Carvey impression) "Wouldn't be prudent. Not at this juncture."

The next number is 2. What do I win? :)
#6: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jan 19, 2012
that is correct! i think i'll take lead of the movie title series in the award department, otherwise others may get jealous :)
#7: Claudia (clau_bolson) on Jan 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
can you please explain why the next number is 2?
#8: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Jan 19, 2012
yes, what song was it?
#9: Gator (gator) on Jan 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
Syllables. Specifically, counting the number of syllables when counting up from 1. 2 is the number of syllables for 30.
#10: Claudia (clau_bolson) on Jan 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
So I should add to item #2, that a fairly good knowledge of English is needed also.
#11: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jan 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
i guess "fairly good knowledge of English" could be considered a "special expertise" ...how about we leave the English version as is, but we add knowledge of English to the alternate language editions of the TMC?

i tried to help by stacking them in groups of 10 and putting enough numbers on there that the solver would be tempted to actually count them out...and enough that a pattern would show ("what's up with that seventh column...")

nice one
