It's funny how names don't make it through translation. For example, at the start of Japanese animation (colloquially "anime") becoming popular in America, the translators changed the characters' names from the originals to either similar sounding names popular in America or simply were so lazy as to just use a name that starts with the same letter. After all, Americans were not used to names like Kimiko, or Sakura, or Kousuke, or Taro. One of my favorite detectives of all time, Kudo Shinichi, (family name fist, personal name last) became Jimmy Kudo. The meaning behind his name in Japanese was "One Truth". It was perfect for a detective. But Jimmy has no such meaning and should have never replaced the original. In this particular case with Tintin, I am not saying that Terry is a bad substitute for Snowy's name because for all we know, Snowy might sound similar to an offensive word in Danish.
