A motorbike helmet.

I used edge logic to get me started and then the rest fell into place with no guessing. Great puzzle Marz. As the wife of a rider, I can appreciate this in more ways than just a fun solve. :)

Thank you all :)

Alicia, this is my favourite head protection, as I also ride a motorbike. Do you go riding with your husband as a passenger?

In CA we have a helmet law for motorcyclists. Good puzzle.

Thanks Brian :)
Is there still places where one doesn't have to wear a helmet?
#9: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Dec 17, 2011 [SPOILER]
According to a google search Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire have no motorcycle helmet laws. btw New Hampshire's state motto is "Live free or die"

Fantastic puzzle, Marie-Louise. He kinda looks like a Doonesbury character.

Yes Marz, I ride with hubby sometimes. And here in Arizona, it is not required to wear a helmet except anyone under age 18 must be in a DOT approved one.

We used to have helmet laws here in PA, but they were repealed a few years ago. There is the rather Libertarian feeling that no-one gets hurt but the individual whose choice it was.

<rant>
This is rather ingenuous. Society is hurt in several ways by this sort of thing. For some to get the feeling of wind blowing through their hair*, everyone must pay increased amounts for their own insurance and in taxes. The severely injured and dead negatively impact both their own families' income and also the broader society's economy.

It is tempting to say that people who take 'personal' risks -- e.g. this or smoking -- should be completely responsible for their own medical expenses and not be covered by insurance or public health money.

However, this is idealistic. Generally, the people who ignore risk are not the most responsible to begin with. So then you're left with the choice of paying for it or letting them and their families suffer for it.

So the practicality of it is, do we allow more personal freedom that drives up the cost of living for everyone, or do we regulate individual actions to benefit society as a whole? And where is the balance point?
</rant>

*Usually thinning or even non-existent hair. As the "Motorcycles are Everywhere" safety campaign started in PA, and the boom in ridership really got going, it became obvious that the demographic was skewing radically toward baby-boomers.

Arizona doesn't have a helmet law for adults? Huh. All the riders I know (fellow baby boomers) wear helmets. I guess they put personal safety and social responsibility above legal freedom of choice.

When I was 17-18, I dated a guy in a motorcycle club, and I never wore a helmet when I rode; neither did he. We were pretty dumb back then. I only got dumped once, along side a muddy road. All I suffered was muddy shoes. I was lucky. My ex-boyfriend wasn't so lucky. The summer after we broke up, he was killed in a road accident.

Even if I didn't have to wear a helmet I would, I wear one for the motorcycle, for the bicyle and when riding a horse, I take a risk whenever I engage in these activities, so I don't want to increase the risk anymore than necessary by not wearing protection. I need to be here for my children, and I want to be around for as long as I can to keep enjoying these activities, especially motorbike riding :)

Thanks all for your comments, very interesting indeed!

That is sad about your ex-boyfriend Teresa.

I figured you were a sensible kinda gal, Marie-Louise. :-)
#16: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Dec 19, 2011 [SPOILER]
We don't always wear our helmets.. but when we're going on any highway trip (speeds above 55mph), we do wear them. I too have lost an ex to a motorcycle mishap and should use it as a reminder to myself that safety is top priority but like many of us, I often take things for granted and learn some lessons the hard way. I will now take this thought into consideration more often when I decide to ride along even on the short trips.

Good for you Alicia, we want you here as long as possible :) Keep enjoying those motorbike trips, nothing better! :)

Yes Teresa, I can be sensible :D
