New version published by aldege.

I tried a bunch of things but still can't get it to say solvable by logic alone.

Dang. I'm stuck too. I don't want to peek or that will ruin the fun. So another puzzle gets to sit in my unfinished file.
#5: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Oct 22, 2011 [HINT]
Solved by logic alone. Lots of stuff I can't remember, some two-way logic, some "since both 14s (C11,C12) can't BOTH start however high at least one must extend one more on the low end", some internal edge logic especially with the 5 in C17 violating C18 by making >2s and smile logic to place the last four blacks.

nice challenge.

Teresa, please try what David says, and David thanks for being persistent and solving it.:)
#7: Gator (gator) on Oct 28, 2011 [HINT]
To detail more out of what David said: Once the line logic is done, look at the 14 clues in columns 11 and 12 and the one clue in row 3. Both 14 clues cannot extend up to row 3. This makes either R17C11 or R17C12 a black. But because of the 3 clue in row 17, if either one is black then they are both black. Some more line logic.

I'll look at this a little later to see if I can get further.

Sorry I didn't keep better track of what I was doing :/

Thx Gator and David.

no problem - a little hard - but no guessing required, just good old fashioned logic.
#11: karl (keicher) on Mar 25, 2018
7 years later - still requires guessing.
#12: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Mar 26, 2018 [HINT]
if karl saying it requires guessing isn't enough to convince people it's solvable then i don't know what is! so i went back and resolved it and these are the only advanced moves i made this time:

- C11-13R17 can't all be dots or it violates R3, so they are black
- the 14 in C12 can't start in R4 or it violates C11, making C12R4 a dot
- smile logic to end
