Wow

If that's your ride, Bill, then I'm curious what you wear on your wrist. I'm more of a watch guy ;)
#18: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Oct 16, 2025
Hi David -

I like watches and clocks too!

My daily wear is a Rolex Milgauss. I also have an Oyster Perpetual Datejust, a tank - style Baume et Mercier Automatic, and a Movado. I also have a small collection of older interesting watches, including a first-generation Bulova Accutron.

I have some beautiful antique clocks as well. I got the itch when touring Europe as a child, and a cathedral had a huge clock that had been running non-stop since the seventeenth century, and when that sunk in, it was a major shift in my perspective on life.

One watch I had (and wish I could remember wherever I put it years ago) was one left at the lost and found in the Student Union building at the University of Utah in 1986 (where I worked the desk). Not having been claimed at the end of the year, the boss said I could have it. It was a Raketa, a simple analog wristwatch, hand wound, with arabic numerals. What puzzled me was that it said "Made in USSR" in English, not Cyrillic, letters. And at the time, I don't think any consumer item was exported by the Soviet Union.

Thanks to Google, I just now learned that it (claims to be) the only watch factory in the world that manufactures in-house every single component, including the mainspring.
And historically, they are very significant.

For the curious:

David, I hope you see this!

I hope David is okay. He hasn't been on the site since July, which doesn't seem like him. I tried sending him a friend request on Facebook and he didn't respond to that, either, so I am worried.
#21: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Oct 18, 2025
A quick Google showed that David changed jobs in July and became a project manager. He is probably swamped. Good luck to you, David!

Thanks Joe -- that's a relief!
#23: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Oct 23, 2025
Hi everybody! Sorry to make you worry. Strange that it says I haven't been on the site since July Valerie because I have been every once in a while, but Joe is mostly right; I have been swamped with my new job! Back to working on the building types I actually love to design though! I also just got back from a little over two weeks on a 1st anniversary/belated-honeymoon trip, so I haven't been on for at least that long :)

Circling back to Bill and our shared love of timepieces! The Milgauss (specifically the green one) sits in the #2 slot for the brand with Explorer II Polar and Cameron Deepsea above and below. Beautiful watch! My wishlist Baume et Mercier is from their Cobra series :)

I've heard of Raketa but haven't ever owned one. I do have a couple of older-style Vostoks including a Radio Room and another that I'm currently modding slightly.

I love all sorts of watches especially when they have a story or have interesting designs or features. I have Breguet, JLC, IWC, Moser, etc. but also love Swatch, Timex, Casio, etc. ...most of mine float on the less expensive end of "in between those extremes." Lean chronos and divers, but have the spectrum. My oldest is 100 years old, my youngest was purchased new last week :) Really love variety!

I just have my vintage Mickey Mouse watch (from 1980-something) that I'll eventually get a new battery for. It's gone through a number of bands and batteries over the years.

David - I've thought for a while that the site may not be reporting last login times correctly, so maybe it was that. Anyway, glad you are okay!
#27: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Oct 24, 2025
Switching up the straps are a great way to refresh the look, add character or simply keep the old one from falling off :) Vintage Mickey is a classic!

Valerie, very strange because I know I even commented on some puzzles during that time. Maybe the server just doesn't like me very much. I won't take it personally :P

David, I had a client (partially) pay a debt with what I call a "Rolon" or "Nolex", a replica Oyster Perpetual Day / Datejust, and I accepted it because it was actually automatic! I had no idea a replica would carry an automatic movement. If I remember, I knocked about $300 off the fee, maybe 25 years ago.

I've never worn it in public, because the band is flimsy and looks like a fake from 20 yards.

I also have a pocketwatch where you can flip open the back cover, and there's a thin crystal showing all the rubies in the movement. Beautiful!

David, I read years ago that the watchmakers at Patek Phillippe feared the art would disappear, so they embarked on a project to construct the most complex watch ever made, that would be accurate for leap years, moon phases, and other goodies ("complications" in the industry) for 100 years. The project was also to attract and train a new generation of craftsmen.
#30: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Oct 25, 2025
The fake watch industry has gotten so good that they'll clone the actual movements specific to the watch model. There are some so good that rolex boutique agents have to check serial numbers because they cant tell by looking even after taking the back off.

Saw a Patek Phillipe pocket watch in person last week that was made in 1887. Beautiful watch!

The complications are the features I mentioned enjoying the variety of. I have watches with moon phase and moon pointer, flyback chrono, GMT, rattrapante, wandering hours, retrograde day, etc, etc. I have a watch that has a subdial that functions specifically as a soccer game time keeper. I have a watch that only has one hand that goes around once a day. One that uses iconic buildings per time zone to track all zones at the same time. Weird regulator watch with propeller style hands. One that the hands free spin/dangle loose until you tilt your wrist at normal viewing angle and they snap fully-mechanically into place. I love the creative, expressive artistry mixed perfectly with the technical, engineering prowess.
