Tom, we've always been told to sit in a closet.

The trouble with "time-proven" advice is that it is often outdated. Today's closets are often as open as the room itself. Bi-fold and sliding doors are no protection.

*You should go to the place in your house where the structure is the strongest.*

A small closet with a regular door has a lot of wood surrounding it. If you have no such closet (or it's full of immovable objects), then you should get into a corner. If the ceiling falls in, it'll hit the center but tend to get hung up in the corners.

Also choose a corner away from falling hazards. For instance, in my house I'd have to pick a corner away from my 2 chimneys and out from under the claw-foot tub.

Luckily we don't live in Tornado Alley, and we have a lot of hills around us. (They tend to break up tornadoes). That's no guarantee, however. About 10 years ago we did have a microburst that sounded just like a tornado and did almost as much damage. It took down several trees and broke a lot of the rest. Luckily not much damage to the houses around here, though.

Joe & others, i have loads of info about tornados, i will send them to Jota. Perhaps she will know how to distribute this material. This has very sound advice of where to take cover.
