Ant, that's right, its 81. I didn't remember (no big surprise there). My kids learned at an early age: remember where Mom parks the car AND learn how to read a map because Mom can't. For a trip, I always plan ahead and give myself time to get lost.
#13: Trish (tryingmysoul) on Mar 17, 2011
I was going to say "Who hasn't done that?", but I'm, apparently mistaken.
#14: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 17, 2011

Bugaboo, I would have taken Mr B with me but I didn't have him then. I was driving my brother's land rover.
#16: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Mar 17, 2011
Tom, i'm not saying that i've never gotten lost or driven past my exit or have been so into the music and wonderful weather that i was daydreaming for a while, but i've never been driving in the wrong direction for an hour, maybe a half hour.lol.
#17: Shirlej Martin (Shirlej) on Mar 17, 2011

There's two kinds of travelers, those that have been lost and those that will be. One of my personal motto's is "You can never have too many maps." i learned how to use a map right after I learned to read - in my family you got to ride shotgun in the front seat if you were the navigator, but if you made a mistake, you were demoted to the middle of the back seat, on the hard hump above the drive train. I went on to a career as a cartographer (mapmaker). I love my GPS unit, but I still use paper maps to plan longer trips.

Joel, if you became a cartographer, that probably means you didn't read in the back seat. I used to print out directions from Map Quest and also take road maps. Guess having both didn't help me. But sometimes getting lost can be fun. Once my son and I came across Metropolis, llinois. (town's name might be spelled wrong) Superman town!
#21: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 18, 2011
you right Sarah...i was superman in dat city
#22: Sarah Andrews (sarah) on Mar 18, 2011
Tom, you're Superman? in Illinois? That town has the large statue. Plus there is so much Superman things to buy.
#23: Joel Lynn (Furface1) on Mar 18, 2011
Sarah, I get carsick if I read in the car.

Before I got a GPS unit, I'd print out the Mapquest directions and maps. Before that, I got lots of maps from AAA. Even with my GPS now, I like to look at the satellite photos on Bing Maps before I go to a new place. My new car has a built in navi system, but I still like the graphics on my old Garmin.

Joel, 2 days after we moved here, I left on a trip. On the return trip, 100 miles from home, I couldn't find the correct country road. I stopped at a McDonald's and asked if anyone knew where I lived LOL. Luckily one man lived about 20 miles from where I lived and said I could follow him. It would be embarrassing (ok, it was) but I didn't know the area at all as I hadn't lived there yet.

What great stories! I love looking at maps and will often just zoom in on a satellite map and study an area particularly if I want to get a feel for the terrain in a book I an enjoying reading.
#26: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on May 29, 2014
Oh that's a great idea, Norma.. I always wonder just how precise some of the novels I read are when it comes to the description of the trees and surroundings. I'll have to remember that. :D
#27: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Jan 13, 2018
Great illustration of the story. I have done that more than once.
