Puzzle Description:

The basic beginning knot for doing macramé - square knot. See more about this in the comments.

#1: Gator (Gator) on Feb 7, 2011 [SPOILER]

Start with the left cord (blue), form a loop and place the cord behind the core cords (green). Take the right cord (red) under the left cord, over the core cords, and through the left side loop. Tighten the knot.

If you keep starting with the left cord, you will end up with a spiral pattern. If you alternate starting cords, you will end up with flat pattern.

My mother-in-law used to raise and sell wild birds, and she made macrame nets to hang all of her birdhouses.

I'm just starting to learn it. I'm going to attempt a hanging pot holder in a few weeks, but I first want to make sure I get all of the knots down first. I've only done 4 cords so far, but the holder will be 12 or 16 cords.

Good solve.

I remember when macrame pot hangers and jewelry were all the rage back in the late 70s when I was a kid. I made a lopsided beaded hanger for Girl Scouts that I think my mom still has somewhere. :)

A new Gator side, nice!

Great puzzle! I used to do a lot of macrame everything from hanging plant holders to very fine jewellery. I am not sure my over fifty eyes will be able to see the knots anymore. Let us know how the macrame turns out gator.

I am fascinated with knots like this. I like to crochet. Macrame was a little too hard for me. Good luck on your new hobby. Don't forget to make some more cool puzzles for us. This one was fun.

Actually, all that is shown in the picture is a "Half Knot" - which is half of a square knot. :)
