The monkey pictured is a rhesus macaque, one of many who live on the grounds of the Taj Mahal. Hindus consider the primates sacred. In the ancient Sanskrit epic the Ramayana, the monkey god Hanuman symbolizes wisdom, devotion, righteousness and strength. Many people, however, consider the monkeys pests. They are known to steal anything that isn't nailed down: eyeglasses, cell phones, food, purses, you name it. There are even stories of marauding monkeys storming office buildings and trashing file cabinets - in one such case secret documents were tossed about. Some tourists who visit the Taj Mahal purchase sticks from local vendors. Shaking or waving a stick at an approaching monkey usually keeps him at bay. I think I'd try a softer approach and offer the monkey a piece of bread or fruit. Just remember to keep your valuables safely tucked away!#2: Jane Doe (telly) on Dec 21, 2010

Oh my gosh, what an awesome puzzle! The pleasure of watching this image unfold was a delight. I could hardly wait to read the story that goes with it. Totally entertaining on all levels.#6: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Dec 22, 2010
thank you very much, everyone. i really appreciate your comments :-) i was totally fascinated reading about the monkey "problem" that exists across India. recently, New Delhi has brought in black-faced langurs to drive the macaques away. the langurs are a much larger monkey, and more threatening, and macaques won't mess with them, however some people predict that both species will eventually form a symbiotic relationship and bring about an even BIGGER monkey problem...#7: Susan Duncan (medic25733) on Dec 22, 2010
