Topic #112: creator weekly challenge
By Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty)

#1: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008

I everyone I just had an idea that can be fun and challenging for everyone.

I propose to make weekly challenge for puzzle creator. We annonce a theme and let people try doing something great with that theme for a week than we declare a winner for that week. Then we start with a new theme.

the purpose off this is to 1. assure new puzzle on this website on a constant basic and 2. maeke averyone discover new creator that sometime goes dilude by those who post more puzzle.

I propose myself and Adam and a third ( volonteer needed) as judge. Adam is doing puzzle at a rate that no one follow these day and he got a critizing side that is well know So adam please enter the game with me. As for the third judge I'm waiting for any volonteer

for the challenge to work well we'll have to apply rule so here it goes

max size of 40X40
difficulty wanted around 2-3
number of colour : no restriction

this way it give chance to a maximum of people to do the puzzle

the puzzle gonna be judge on:

quality of the image
originality
rules requirement obtain
fun factor

So there is nothing to win except maybe having a star or something next to your name if you win ( have to see with Jan if that possible) but fun and time well spend is the reward

so if your interest your puzzle should be name

WC#1: ____________

that for weekly challenge #1 : your title

finally the them of week one: My favorite movie

hope you go for it

Sylvain

I don't mind being a judge. And to all of you out there who are wondering... I will pick the best puzzle, regardless of who made it. I won't tell why I DIDN'T pick the worst ones, only why I DID pick the best one. That way no one will be offended.

One other option... everyone could create a NEW account name, just for the weekly challenge, and that way I won't know who created which puzzle anyway. Then that person could have the satisfaction of knowing they won, and they can tell each other who they are behind my back, (if they want the praise of other users on here) so I won't ever know and therefore possibly be biased.

By the way, what date does this start? How about starting it yesterday 8-25-08 (and always running Monday through Monday), with judging every Tuesday.
#3: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
thst fine by me but I don't think we need new id

as far as starting it yesterday I sugest next monday so it give time to put the word to everyone so this week gonna be like 1 and 1/2 week long them after that each monday new theme annoce and winner annonce on tuesday

glad you jump on board
#4: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Aug 26, 2008
Well, I don't want some people to think I am biased against them because I know who they are when they submit a puzzle entry for this contest. But if you say no new ID's, then ok.
#5: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
but you wont be alone judging I'm there too

but if this is going to work we have to spread the idea

so lets slide it in our comment so that everybody see it
#6: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Aug 26, 2008
I know... but you know what I mean. We will have to find a time to be on together to chat, right? so we can decide, right? Or do we each pick the one we think wins, and then tell each other. If we each pick a different one, then we have to discuss it and find a winner.

OK I am going to post "READ TOPIC #112 IN GENERAL FORUM" on every recent puzzle, so almost everyone has a chance to read this and know about the idea. Probably most people won't want to participate, and that's ok. As long as they remember to let us know, in the first comment of their own puzzle, that they are submitting that particular puzzle for the contest of "........." (whatever the topic happens to be each week).
#7: Jane Doe (telly) on Aug 26, 2008
Hi. Saw some of your postings so I thought I'd check this out. Sounds like a good idea. Ought to be a lot of fun! :D. I'll get my thinking cap on and ready for next Monday.
#8: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Aug 26, 2008
Cool! We have our first participant!
#9: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
if they read this topic they'll know how to rigthly name the puzzle elligible for the contest

as for choosing a winner I think that checking each puzzle them coming togeter maybe on the chat room or any other way could be really easy. I'm currently on parental leave so I'm at home all day until the end of september. but if we check a time and make sure we're both on

that or we can exchange e-mail or something. I'm on both myspace and facebook so I'm not to hard to catch
#10: Jane Doe (telly) on Aug 26, 2008
What's parental leave?
#11: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
we adopt a child so I'm being pay to stay at home to make sure that the bond between parent and child solidify well
#12: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Aug 26, 2008
He had a baby, I am assuming. Like maternity leave, maybe he meant paternity leave. ???
#13: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
So now let clarify a couple of small thing

1- the contest is now officialy open
2- you have up to monday september 1st noon (eastern time) to post your puzzle on theme #1 : my favorite movie
3- the new subject of week #2 gonna be post on this topic on september 1st in the evening
4- the first winner gonna be annonce either monday night or tuesday morning
5- all puzzle most have in the title WC# X : ________
that mean W = weekly C = challenge # X= being the week of the contest and the title of your new puzzle

#14: Jane Doe (telly) on Aug 26, 2008
awesome, congrats Sylvain on the adoption.
#15: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
thanks
#16: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 26, 2008
Jan can you tell me if it would be possible to add something ( star or other) beside the name of the people who win the weekly challenge

maybe even having a code if the same people win often like 5 win give you a red star 10 a green one or something

I know something like this is done on many forum and it indicate the number of time you post so can it be EASILY done cause I don't want to bother you with extra work on something as trivial as this.

If its not possible maybe I just open a new topic in wich I'll keep track of the diffrent winner ( that is if it work in the following weeks)

thanks

Sylvain
#17: Jan Wolter (jan) on Aug 27, 2008
Might be easiest just to have an honor roll page that records each weekly contest winner with theme and a link to the puzzle. There could be link to that page from the main menu.

Please don't create separate id's for this. If your puzzle wins, it'd be nice if people can search for your other puzzles.

I don't want to be a judge (not that anyone asked). I'm in charge of enough things already.
#18: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 27, 2008
that exactly why I didn't ask you personnatly and you comment on another puzzle about how everything you say became "official" so you try to not involve yourself in thing like that

plus you are one of the most lucrative vreator we need you to participate

:)
#19: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Aug 28, 2008
Jan now that its rolling and that we have more than one participant can you tell me how this honor roll page of you might work.

I think the way it could work is if you program the page and on tuesday we give you the winner to be include with the link to the honnor roll page.

I'm waiting to see how you want to be doing this

( plus it could be sweet of you to try posting a new puzzle since yours were the first I done here)

thanks Sylvain

PS: you can reach me by mail at theqwerty789@gmail.com if you want to discust other technicality

PS2:Adam you can do the same to check for the winner
#20: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 1, 2008
Looks like I missed the weekly challenge :(
of course don't know if I have a favorite movie
#21: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Sep 1, 2008
Well, it doesn't matter. You can still do an image/puzzle from ANY movie. Today is the last day for this week's challenge, so you can still make it! Judging tomorrow.
#22: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 1, 2008
So its now nearly 4 pm on monday september 1st ( easter time)

we have 7 puzzle on list at the moment. The official contest will close at 11 pm tonight ( still easter time)

And Adam and myself gonna annoce the winner sometime tommorow afternoon

As for WC#2 I'll annonce the theme tonight at 11 pm and application for it gonna be open until monday september 8 at 11 pm

thanks to all who participate and I hope the quality of the puzzle we receive will encourage other to send in new puzzle.

thank you again

Sylvain
#23: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 1, 2008
Sylvain dear!
Does this mean it's time to hunt for easter eggs?
I'm just teasing... :p

#25: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 1, 2008
ATTENTION

ATTENTION

Weekly Challenge #2 theme is: A place you need to see

it can be a monument, a country, a natural wonder or anything you think people should go see once in their life.

So lets get on the puzzle creator rigth now cause I can't wait for the first WC#2: puzzle to be out on the main site
#26: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Sep 2, 2008
Hi Sylvain, sorry I didn't enter weekly challenge #1, I was going to do one over the weekend but I ended up spending the last 4 days in hospital with Aiden, he got the flu, then when that was starting to get better a strange swelling came up on his right temple, we saw 5 docs, a couple of ultra sound docs and none of them knew what it was caused from, anyways it went down today (Tuesday) and they let him come home, thank goodness! He is perfectly fine, he will be on antibiotics for another week plus a follow up from his doc.
I love the new theme for the next challenge, we should see some pretty cool puzzles and I am already wondering what to create as my entry.
Congrats to the winner and place getters, there certainly was some great puzzles, I think I still have few to solve yet and I am looking forward to doing them. :)
#27: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 2, 2008
Glad your son is doing better Marz. That can be scary. I look forward to seeing your entry.
#28: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 2, 2008
thanks Marz I was wondering what happen to you since I did not see you for a couple of week
#29: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 2, 2008
Thanks Jan this honor page is wonderful
#30: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 2, 2008
My best to Aiden, Marz.
#31: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 3, 2008
Just one lonely entry in WC#2 at this time

judging going to be easy at this rate...
#32: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 3, 2008
Not really, because we won't know who to give the SECOND and THIRD place prizes to. LOL That will be difficult!
#33: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 4, 2008
ATTENTION ATTENTION

after speaking with at least one other judges we decide that each user can only submit one puzzle by week.

There no restriction on submitting week after week and the best puzzle will win even if that mean making the same person win two or three week in a row

So no double entry in one week will be allow

Jan can you add this rule to the honr page

Jota can you signal me wich of your two puzzle for WC#2 you keep in competition

thanks all

Sylvain
#34: Meg Tayler (rebelcat) on Sep 4, 2008
I'll have to skip this challenge, as I'm heading out of town now. I'm definitely in for next week, though! Whatever it is.
#35: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 4, 2008
I'd suggest allowing people to submit more than one puzzle, but limiting people to winning only one prize per week. So you can submit more than one puzzle, but you can't be both winner and runner up. If part of the goal of the contest is to encourage more posting of good puzzles, then why limit the number of puzzles a person can post? This would also absolve people from trying to choose which of their puzzles the judges will like best.
#36: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 4, 2008
You made a good point here Jan I think that I'll follow your lead on this.

So yes you can entry more than one puzzle but only one of them can be in the 3 first place at the end

thank you for your well think argument once again
#37: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 4, 2008
Very good suggestion Jan
Meg we will look forward to your next week :)
#38: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 4, 2008
Ok.
#39: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Sep 4, 2008
dont know if this is the right place fore this but...

am I the only one who gets logout when I press the honors-button... Im guessing the code on the old button got left on
#40: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 4, 2008
Jan told to reload the page by loging out going elsewhere and come back to log again
#41: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 4, 2008
I bet there is a bug that logs people out who didn't log in with the remember me option. I'll fix it when I'm on a real computer.
#42: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Sep 5, 2008
it looks like that worked thanks Sylvian.
#43: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Sep 5, 2008
btw I think this contest is a great idea. Im going to try to make a puzzle fore this weeks challenge but dont know if i have time to make it look the way i want
#44: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 5, 2008
COME ON
people we only got 5 WC#2 puzzle so far

still all week-end to create a wonderful "chef-d'oeuvre" ( or should I say masterpiece )

Can wait to see your creation

Sylvain
#45: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 5, 2008
I'll do mine on Sunday! :P
#46: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 6, 2008
good can't wait
#47: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 7, 2008
Qwerty: Can I make mine 30x50? it adds up the same...let me know.
#48: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 7, 2008
LOL, Telly. I am ok with that option, if the other judges are as well. But I am not the final say. What about 45x35? Or ANY combination that adds up to 80 total (around 2 edges)?
#49: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 7, 2008
If nancy say its ok than ok since Adam id ok with it
#50: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 7, 2008
The idea of Adam to make the grid size adaptable is nice

So for now on every combinaition that fit in between

20X60 (or 60X20) and 40X40 are accepted you can still go smaller if you want to

Rule are made to be ajust and that a great exemple of it
#51: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 7, 2008
hey you made up the rules, who am I to say any different, so does that mean someone can do a 10x70? I guess it would all depend on what would fit comfortably on your screen..
I am a stickler for the rules, so to allow it you would have to change the rules..I'm not saying that I'm not flexible 'cause I would love to see Telly's puzzle, but you will need to draw the line somewhere, right!
I know that a larger size makes a puzzle easier to create...SO Sylvain/Adam what is the maximum height & width that you will allow? back in your corner :)
#52: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 7, 2008
like I say in my last post anything between 20X60 and 40X40 are good as far as I'm concern but we can still go smaller

I don't really want 15X65, 10X70 or 5X75 those are to linear and don't make good puzzle

So with a minimum of 20 on one side and a maximum of 60 on the other side it keep the puzzle a reasonable size ( because the some of both size can't exceed 80)

So if Jan can find a simplier way to explain it and change it in the rule above the honor page I think we can go on like that.

Sylvain
#53: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 7, 2008
ah you must have posted that while I was composing my comment
didn't get to read it
#54: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 7, 2008
So Telly where is your puzzle?????
#55: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 7, 2008
I was just wondering the same thing :)
#56: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 7, 2008
Me three.

I agree. 20x60 at most, not to exceed 80.
#57: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 7, 2008
thanks
#58: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 7, 2008
it's coming.
#59: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 7, 2008
Really? LOL Thanks.
#60: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 7, 2008
You all have produced such wonderful puzzles..it is going to be a challenge for me to add my input in this weeks judging but at the same time I am so excited to be involved :)

Rules update

IMPORTANT MOST READ

After two week of WC we gather the three judge and feel that some of the rules as to be redefine so here are the new standard for the Weekly Challenge

-- The contest going to be run from monday morning to sunday night.

-- I'm going to post the winner (in post 114) and the new theme (in post 112) as early as possible on monday morning

-- Every puzzle as to be online by 7 pm on sunday (eastern time) to be eligible

--Puzzle name should always start by WC# X : to be consider

-- No colour limitation except if mention in the theme of the week

-- the size of the puzzle can not go higher than 80 when you add both side : ex: 10X70 or 35X45 or 50X30 all add to 80 so it can go from 1X79 (or 79X1) to 40X40 OR SMALLER

-- no more difficulty limitation but consider that we are aiming at a larger public so a difficulty around 3 is perfect

-- the puzzle most be logically solvable to be consider, if by the end of the week a puzzle still as a ? beside it, it will not be consider

-- A user can post more then 1 puzzle by week but can only have 1 of the three winning place

-- the puzzle are judge on *quality of the final image
* originality
* fun factor
* respect of the theme

Thank you all for your understanding and your collaboration

yours three judges

so we start here the fifth week in this contest and I'm so happy to see everything going so well, thank you all

the theme of this week

WC#5: Hi my name is Todd

let me explain: We judges want to know who or what Todd is. It can be anything from a person to an animal, an object, a mystical creature, an alien etc

Let us discover your Todd we are eager to meet your version of Todd

The normal rule apply here no restriction this week
#83: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 21, 2008

#87: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 25, 2008
Come on guys only two entry so far this week in the WC

I'm sure you all have a Todd inside you that want to come out

#88: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Sep 25, 2008
I have got a Todd inside Sylvain, I just need to sit and concentrate real hard to get that Todd out and into pixel form, wonder if there is something I can take to help with that? :)
#89: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 25, 2008
Sylvain, there is plenty of time. No need to pressure people into turning in a puzzle the first 1-2 days. You end up with poor quality like that. That's why Marz and Telly do so well. They take time, think about it, create it, edit it to near perfection, and submit it later in the week.
#90: Jane Doe (telly) on Sep 25, 2008
aah, how nice monkeyboy. lol marz. :)
#91: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 25, 2008
I know but patience was never truly one of my strong point

I guess I dream about a week with 30 something puzzle to judge from, than again if that ever occur I'll be the first to bang my head to the wall with the difficulty that this will give me as a judge

the world can never be a perfect place it seem....lol
#92: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 26, 2008
I think #2129 is pretty much the perfect "Todd" puzzle. Too bad it predates the puzzle contest and is too big to boot.
#93: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 26, 2008
you are right about that Jan

but where is your Todd
#94: Arduinna (arduinna) on Sep 26, 2008
Agreed! That one was terrific, Naneki!
#95: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Sep 28, 2008
& I'm one of the judges...thank you :)
#96: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 28, 2008
WC#5 is close

check back here for WC#6 theme later

also don't forget to check topic 114 for winner and 122 for the interview
#97: Jota (Jota) on Sep 28, 2008
Judges should rate the puzzles themselves and not rely on "users" ratings, those can be "unfair". If someone decides that a puzzle is unsolvable, the puzzle has to be redone, whether that is true or not.

Thanks
#98: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 29, 2008
Eventually I get around to correcting unsolvability ratings, or they correct themselves as more people do them. I wouldn't redo a puzzle unless you really agree that it is unsolvable.
#99: Jota (Jota) on Sep 29, 2008
I agree and I wouldn't do it, except that they take your puzzle out of the competition ...

The honors page is now automated.

All the winners and themes and such are now in the database. There are two tabs on the page. One gives pretty much the same old display, the other gives the author rankings that Sylvain has been generating manually (and perfectly accurately) so far.

If and only if your login name is 'qwerty', 'monkey', 'naneki', or 'jan' then you should get a third tab. This allows you to enter the themes, due dates, and (if needed) additional notes for each week's puzzle. You can also enter the winning puzzles and their ranks. You can enter more than one at the same rank, or you can invent custom ranks in addition to the three standard ones, so if you ever want to give an award for "most egregious" or "miss congeniality" that that option exists.
#107: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 13, 2008
I think the editing functions should be easy enough for our judges to figure out, but if anything is unclear, or if bugs crawl out of the cracks, please let me know.
#108: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 13, 2008
wow thanks jan that going to be so perfect
#109: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 13, 2008
Um, Jan... by chance can you make it "monkeyboy" and not "monkey?" Thanks.
#110: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 13, 2008
Sometime you'll need to give us a map to your many identities. Why are there so many of you? What are they all for?

There is no "moneyboy". I've added "monkeyboy" to the WC admin list.
#111: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 14, 2008
Jan when I try to acces the honor page I got an "internal server error" message

I can acces anything rigth now
#112: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 14, 2008
Hmm.. works for me, even from your account. I guess I'll need to dig into the server error logs to figure this out.
#113: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 14, 2008
I might have fixed it.
#114: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 14, 2008
Jan, I don't have the third tab on the honors page under "monkey" or "monkeyboy."
#115: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 14, 2008
work great from here thanks Jan
#116: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 15, 2008
The way it goes now Jota going to have the 1st place she want since the start of the competition

A great puzzle but no competition at all and its already wednesday night

come on people don't tell me that the 80 and the 90 where not a good source of memories
#117: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 15, 2008
Were you actually alive back then???? LOL
#118: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 15, 2008
Yeah I was

born near the end of the 70's live my chilhood in the 80's and my teen/young adult in the 90's those are my years man

Unlike many of you I hadn't have the chance of seeing the Beetle come to america or Jim morrisson live on stage but I still got cool memories of later in the century... ;-)
#119: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 15, 2008
Sure thing, man. It was a joke. I know how old you are. :-)
#120: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Oct 15, 2008
older than you :)
#121: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 15, 2008
Really? Don't be too sure.
#122: Jota (Jota) on Oct 15, 2008
I respect the judges very much, but I don't like being made fun of.
The fact that I take the contest very seriously, and comply with all the rules on time, doesn't mean I don't deserve to win (A very hurt Jota)
#123: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 15, 2008
I hope you aren't truly upset. I don't think Sylvain meant anything by it. Yes you are one of the first to complete your puzzles, and you comply with the rules. They are nicely done.
#124: Jane Doe (telly) on Oct 15, 2008
You're wonderful Jota. That's why it takes us all so long to submit puzzles that may, just may, be able to compete with yours. :)
#125: Jota (Jota) on Oct 15, 2008
Come on Monkeyboy, come on Telly ...
#126: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 15, 2008
I'm serious. I don't know what you are "come on'ing" about.
#127: Jota (Jota) on Oct 15, 2008
Of course I'm not truly upset! Who can be upset around this wonderful site! It's all about having fun and taking life as lite as one can while one can.
#128: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 16, 2008
Jota I truly didn't want my message to hurt you the joke was not about a lack of talent on your part but on the lack of participation on the part of all other member. I would never make fun about a creative talent. You are always one of the first one to throw a puzzle in and that wonderful. Many time in the past week your puzzle where consider in the top 3 until the very end. It was just a fun remark on the fact that you said in another place that you enter the WC to win the thing ( and I'm sure this is going to happen one day)

So being the only entry so far this week it was just a crack at that statement, and in no way a hit toward you creative quality. In fact I'm so please that you alway produce one if not many puzzle avery week I truly thing that in a way you broking the ice each week help other following you and posting their puzzle.

So let me officially apologize for the harm I could have done you it was in no way the meaning. I just hope that this misunderstood won't refrain you to do more WC

sorry again
Sylvain
#129: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 16, 2008
Curiously, this theme brings nothing at all to my mind. Two whole decades. I should be able to think of something. I guess I was busy.
#130: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 16, 2008
So, Jan... once again, I will point out that I don't have the third administrative tab under the Honors link. I guess this means I have to resign as judge. Oh darn.
#131: Jota (Jota) on Oct 16, 2008
I was joking, I got it from the beginning Qwerty ... I was never upset or hurt, no need to apologize. I have a great sense of humor and when I said: " a very hurt Jota" I was ROFL and should have indicate it.
:)
#132: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Oct 16, 2008
adam, what tabs do you have on the honors page?
#133: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 16, 2008
"Winning Puzzles" and "Author Rankings."
#134: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 17, 2008
I'll check deeper into that bug when I get a chance. I'd be curious to hear if Nancy is seeing it. The third tab says "Update Listings".
#135: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Oct 17, 2008
yes Jan I have the tab that says "Update Listings".
#136: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 17, 2008
Well, I must have pissed Jan off pretty good for him to not put that tab on mine. :-)
#137: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 18, 2008
Odd. As far as I can tell, the setup on the monkey and monkeyboy accounts is exactly like the naneki account. Need to test more.
#138: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 19, 2008
The WC #8 is close

we are going to do thing a little diffrent now since I can edit the honor page myself.

Topic 112 going to serve as a general topic on WC. If you have comment to post or question to the judges or anything on the general working of the challenge its the place to post

I'll still going to annoce the new theme here since I can explain the name of the theme easily in the post rather than just the tilte in the honor page.

For comment and congratulation on the winning puzzle we are going to continue using topic 114. So all winner can post comment or be congratulate there. I WON'T POST winner on topic 114 but only in the honor page ( same think for the ranking)

The 3 questions interview stay the same in topic 122

thank you
#139: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 19, 2008
WC#9 theme

USE TO BE SO COOL, BUT NOW...

So we are looking for objet, fashion , music , film, or any other thing that at one time in the past where hip cool The Thing, but now... not really

(hint: the disco period give us plenty of it...)
#140: Jota (Jota) on Oct 19, 2008
I have absolutely nothing against Rea, but I need to keep you judges honest, that puzzle was marked and needing guessing (not by me) and very difficult.
If you establish rules, you need to follow them.
Thank you for the honorable mention.
#141: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 20, 2008
the ? was still there ...oups I'll check that with maybe Jan and the other judge and if so its our fault and we are going to correct it.

Thank you for mentionning
#142: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 20, 2008
I've checked the puzzle and it is logically solvable with a little color and edge logic.

Generally one shouldn't have too much faith in the "?" if when you open the puzzle it says "may require some guessing" instead of "requires some guessing". If it says "may" then it is just the average of various people voting, which can be quite unreliable.

In this case two people said it needed "much guessing", one said "some", and five said "none". That averaged out as "some" but only just barely. The majority of the people solving the puzzle didn't rate it.

The slightly weird part is that the two people who said it needed "much" guessing were both the same user who happens to have two accounts for some reason and also happens to be one of the judges, and is generally a pretty sophisticated solver who I would think would know better. But weirdness happens, which is why it says "may".
#143: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 20, 2008
I should point out that this kind of weirdness from individual users tends to sort itself out in time, as more people rate the puzzle. But WC puzzles are usually less than a week old, and often have very few raters so the ratings are often kind of random. I would strongly advise the judges to ignore the ratings and make their own judgments about the quality and solvability of puzzles.
#144: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Oct 20, 2008
wow Jan, What else do you know about all of us? (lol)
I think it's pretty cool that you can look into the ratings & see who & how everyone is rating. But I guess since you are the final judge on the ratings, you would need to know that in order to give a fair & final rating to a puzzle.
Very interesting :)
#145: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 20, 2008
Why don't you make it so that in order to finish a puzzle, you must rate it, so that anyone who solves a puzzle must give it a rating. Or how about do away with ratings all together, since apparently they don't matter. Or leave only the quality rating?
#146: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Oct 20, 2008
I think the rating system is great, it has never caused major problems in the past, if enough people rate the puzzles and rate them properly it gives us a good idea on the quality and difficulty. I have solved many puzzles, and I have often used the ratings as a guide to chose them before I do them, and they have pretty much lived up to their ratings, and for that I am grateful! :)
#147: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 20, 2008
For the most part, I agree with you. The problem is, however, that not enough people rate the puzzles, and the few who do are basically skewing what really should be there.
#148: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Oct 20, 2008
Yeah, I know!
#149: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 20, 2008
So that, to me, is more of a problem than having people not rate anything.
#150: m2 (mercymercy) on Oct 21, 2008
I don't like the idea of being forced to rate puzzles. This will just mean that people choose a standard rating and use that on most of the puzzles. This will not give a better rating system.
#151: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 21, 2008
There have been studies of this done. M2's intuition is correct. Forced ratings tend to be bad. Obviously the database does store everyone's ratings, and obviously I can look at them. I don't usually. But sometimes when a puzzle is voted to have multiple solutions but I don't think it does, then I look to see who is saying it does, to see if I should maybe defer to the majority.
#152: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Oct 21, 2008
It was just a thought, people. Looks like there is no way to have it done right.
#153: Jota (Jota) on Oct 21, 2008
Back in Sept. I proposed the solution (#97) for the WC. My opinion was not taken taken, no changes were made in the rules.
That week, I had made a solvable puzzle, but "someone" marked it as "needs guessing" and I had to work on it and change a good puzzle until the "helper" did solve it, or it was going to be taken out of the competition, as per the "rules" and one of the judges advice. To try to further prove my point, the following week, I rated another puzzle as "needs guessing" and it was"unfairly" taken out of the competition. That's why I thought that giving a prize to a ? puzzle this week was inappropriate. Please change the rules!
#154: Jota (Jota) on Oct 21, 2008
Sorry
#155: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Oct 21, 2008
Jota, I see your point. But like has been mentioned before, the guessing aspect is skewed. I guess Jan has to be the final authority on whether or not guessing is required. If he says no guessing is required, then a puzzle may be considered eligible for the WC. I personally don't care. Maybe the other 2 judges do, and I would value their input.

I have personally solved many difficult puzzles that were rated as "guessing required" without me having to guess at all(using some advanced logic.) There have been other puzzles that were marked as "no guessing required", and even rated as easy-ish (1-3 in difficulty) that I had no idea how they could be that way, and I had to guess (even after restarting multiple times to see if I missed something).

I am sure I am not the only one in this situation, and I don't know what to do about it. Any other suggestions? People have poo pooed my idea of making everyone rate every puzzle they solve, or to do away with ratings altogether, or to just have quality ratings. But no one else has come up with anything better.
#156: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 21, 2008
We made the no guessing rule to have a cetain quality and fun factor in the puzzle listed under WC

the problem is and probably always going to be that what hard for me can be so easy to someone else and vice versa.

So the only thing that we can do here is ask people to note a puzzle as guessing require only if they are sure that its the puzzle that as flaw and not their ability to solve that not good enough

Personally I just want puzzle to be great and fun to solve and open to all, so if the puzzle really need guessing it can cause many user to not try it so that why I don't consider it in the contest. But rule are bondarie that can be move when the necessity of it is rigthful
#157: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 22, 2008
I don't really see a problem here. Most of these "rules" are really meant as guidelines as to what kinds of puzzles the judges are looking for. That means not really big puzzles, not really difficult puzzles, not puzzles with multiple solutions, or which cannot be solved without guessing. Puzzles that are fun to solve and have nice images.

The judges choose the puzzles that best fit their criteria. They "logically solvable" part, as well as the "not to difficult" part and the "fun to solve" part will be up to the judgement of the judges. None of these are black and white crisply defined properties. That's why we have judges. To use judgement.

If a puzzle gets marked by some random user as being not logically solvable, then, of course, the judges are free to ignore that or respect that as they deem appropriate, just as they are not required to give the top prize to the puzzle that has been rated highest by other users. Obviously a puzzle creator may have cause to concern if their puzzles get bad ratings, and may even want to revise the puzzle, but these ratings should not be considered to constrain the choices of the judges.
#158: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 24, 2008
ok what happen here are you all tired of the WC cause last week we had very few puzzle and this week only one so far and its already friday morning

no puzzle from Jota, rea marz telly( probably post her's sunday at 6 pm) and all other regular participant.

If the theme choosen for the wc are the problem tell it to me I'll find new one

Jan put a lot of time in the honor page and I find it sad that now that we can edit this page at will the WC seem to die slowly.

Do you all wich us to continue or not?
#159: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Oct 24, 2008
im sorry sylvian I just don't have time this week. I think the theme was a little hard this week but I definately don't want the competition to stop. Ill try to make a quick small one but I haven't got any idea of what to do.
#160: Jota (Jota) on Oct 24, 2008
Don't stop, it's lots of fun... You'll have mine as soon as I can think of something. This week's theme and the previous one where kind of similar perhaps? Well anyhow please continue.
#161: Jane Doe (telly) on Oct 25, 2008
they were similar, but I'm gonna think of something. :)
#162: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 26, 2008

My heart is pounding so fast ...
#168: Jane Doe (telly) on Nov 8, 2008
I can't think. I've had a brain freeze all week on this one. I'll hopefully think of something fun by tomorrow.
#169: Jan Wolter (jan) on Nov 9, 2008
One contest theme I'd like to see is "Beginner Puzzles". I spent a lot of time once designing puzzle #1, to be small and easy, yet have a decent image and make a good demonstration of basic puzzle solving techniques. It'd be nice to have more such puzzles.
#170: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 9, 2008
Nice idea

I'll check that like a max size of 15X15 only b&W difficulty under 2.5
#171: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 9, 2008
Most, if not all, puzzles that are logically solvable, at that size, by default should be under difficulty of 2.
#172: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 9, 2008
Are you ok with this theme Adam?

What about Nancy? if you are both in fort it then tonight new theme going to be the one suggest by Jan
#173: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 9, 2008
I am fine with it. Let's do it.
#174: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Nov 9, 2008
sure, sounds like something that would get others involved
#175: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 9, 2008

New Theme:

WC#12 Beginner's Puzzle

here we are looking for great small and easy puzzle

Think of it as the puzzle you want to show to somebody that has never play before to get it to like that.

the maximum size of those puzzle this week is 15X15 ( or a max of 30 when you add the two )

Black and white only no colour

the objet of the puzzle as no restriction everything is open as far as the theme in the puzzle

good luck to all participant
#177: Jake Griffin (jako7286) on Nov 12, 2008
Idea for the next theme: Odds and Evens - All row clues are odd numbers, and all column clues are even numbers (or vice versa). What do you think?
#178: Jan Wolter (jan) on Nov 12, 2008
Hmm... have you tried doing that? I think it might be pretty difficult, especially if you want a good picture too. If it's as hard as I think it might be, it might be hard to get three decent entries.
#179: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 12, 2008
I think that as interesting as it seem as a challenge we won't get enought participant to fill the podium.

Just check back in the past 11 week to see that as soon as its to challenging or specific you don't get too much entry.

The idea behind the WC was to help new creator in the search of an idea on what to do in a puzzle. Plus it help certain people to know that the puzzle they do is appreciate by other. It give more puzzle to solve plus give new people the chance to express themself.

Your idea is great Jake try it and challenge other to try do better then you in the first comment of your puzzle I'm sure certain member will try to do it ( maybe even 1 or 2 of our judge at WC) but as far as the WC theme I'll try to stay more mainsteam for a little time
#180: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Nov 12, 2008
We are getting a GREAT response this week & it's only Wednesday ...I'm so excited, we will have so many to chose from..keep them coming :)

Oh My Goodness..so many puzzles, so many possibilities, they are "ALL" so perfect for the theme this week.....
what to do? ...what to do?
(I had to open my mouth & say keep them coming!)
#182: Jota (Jota) on Nov 16, 2008
This was an incredible week, I'm sure it was a record in number of participants.
Yeah!

19 and counting... (excluding the 3 from the judges)
#184: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 16, 2008
WC #12 is officially closed. Thanks to the many of you who entered. Due to inability of the 3 judges to be able to conference together, the judging will be delayed until further notice. We will post the winners as soon as possible. There are many entries, and we want to take our time to ensure the best results possible.

The new theme for WC#13 is......

ANIMALS! Anything animal related. Back to normal requirements, 40x40 size (max), any number of colors, etc.

Good luck to everyone.

#188: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Nov 17, 2008
SHE'S HOOKED!!
I had my daughter help me with my decision making this week on judging which ones would be more of a "beginner" puzzle (since I couldn't go by quality first... I was so lost!) anyway, when I came home from work today she asked me to print her up some more beginner puzzles.

guess now I won't be a "nut" for doing this puzzles all the time
#189: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 17, 2008
LOL, Nancy. That's awesome!

It IS! My puzzle was so SERIOUS(ly easy) LOL
#197: Jan Wolter (jan) on Nov 22, 2008
It did get Adam on the author ratings list, though with rather a low score.
#198: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 22, 2008
Sylvain, take me off that list, please...LOL.

I tried to do it myself, but once again, my 3rd tab on the Honors link to mess with this kind of stuff is mysteriously missing. It has come and gone twice.
#199: Jan Wolter (jan) on Nov 22, 2008
That list is automatically generated from the other list. Sylvain can't take you off without removing the "joke" entry from the other list.

I should probably fix the "top authors" list to not include people with a total score of zero.
#200: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 22, 2008
That works, too.
#201: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 22, 2008
that a great idea since Adam puzzle really need to get notice

Can also be use when one of us judge do a great puzzle in a non-contest wc theme

NEW THEME:

WC#15: create your WC logo

after 15 weeks the Weekly Challenge don't really have an image so I was thinking what a better way to find an identity to the WC then by letting you create this identity. So the only think I ask is no plain letter puzzle. If you choose to make it a letter logo be creative, it possible to do both a creative puzzle and a letter puzzle, been done before and could be done again.

Good luck to all
#206: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 30, 2008
Like it was said in another topic Adam as of today is no longuer a judge in the WC. This situation sould be temporary and in the mean time we are looking for a third interim judge. Nancy and I have ask Jota to do the job in the absence of Adam. We ask her for her implication here in the commentary and as a puzzler who solve and post many puzzle on a regulaiar basic.

If any other user want to give is name in case of Jota refusal fell free to do so, it would be an honor to have you on the team.

If Adam can not take is "job" back after a while we'll consider putting the interim position as a permanent one

thank you all
#207: Jota (Jota) on Nov 30, 2008
Oh! to substitute for Adam or not to, that's the question.
#208: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 30, 2008
:-)

WC#16 Christmas and Holiday fun

x-mas theme puzzle and holiday celebration are what we want to see this week. With Christmas approaching we all turn back to our kids day when Rudolph, Frosty and Santa were mystic figure of the winter wonderland waiting to open our X-mas gifts listening to old Christmas classic sung by Bing Crosby or Dean Martin...

lets the magic of Christmas free in this week theme.

PS: By the way I think that Meg could enter at least one of her advent puzzle as WC#16: advent # X what do you think???
#217: Jota (Jota) on Dec 8, 2008

#220: Joseph Jessen (gijoex2) on Dec 9, 2008
Although the sheer entertainment, and challenge, are really incentive enough to participate in these contests, the term contest implies winners, and I was wondering if there were prizes in the offing? Then, when is usually the beginning and ending of a weekly contest?
Thank you, Jan, for inviting me to participate, and yes I will as soon as I find and formulate a suitable subject.
#221: Jota (Jota) on Dec 9, 2008
It runs from monday morning to sunday by 7 pm (eastern time).
This week, every contestant gets ALL his/her wishes granted during the Holiday Season, courtesy of the three judges or is it the three wise men ? Or one man and two women ?

Anything that commemorate the USA in any form is eligible. It can be from the past ( old president, historical fact, glorious event) the present ( state representation, actual situation, Big Mac ((jk)) ) or the futur ( Georges Clooney in the white house who can tell...lol)

The only restriction is that at least one pixel of red, white and blue must appear in the final image.

Ok I'm going to try something here

I'll anonce next week theme rigth away on Wednesday for one unique reason, I want people who would consider entering WC#24 to really work on their design before posting it, follow me you'll understand

I think I can say without a douth that the majority of us dislike lettre or pattern puzzle, but at the same time some of those puzzle as turn out very cool in the past (I did a couple of them myself that I don't think are that bad), so the challenge is that : PROVE US WRONG by doing either a pattern or a letter puzzle that both fun to solve and great looking.

So the the of WC#24 is : Prove us Wrong, patterns & letters

last thing to avoid mixing thing up please do not post WC#24 puzzle until sunday night

thank you all and good luck

New theme WC31: My version of...

Please read this with great attention.

This is the idea, after 30 theme in the WC we had tons of great puzzle idea. This week we honor those idea. The challenge is to take any WC puzzle from week 1 to 30 and do your own version of it. The idea here is to take the idea behind the puzzle and make it your own. (Ex: this week winner Telly did a uncorn, so you can do your version of a unicorn)

An important factor is that you don't have to follow the puzzle restriction if they was any. What that mean is that you can do a puzzle from USA week in black and white or a puzzle from beginner week in the usual 40*40 format.

Please insert the puzzle number in the first comment so we can know wich one your doing a remake of.

Last note you can't do a remake of your own puzzle

thank you all I can wait to rediscover old WC puzzle in your new version of it
#293: Maria Guedez (bapebyto.1) on Apr 6, 2009
Hi! It´s there a way to find a list of WC puzzles?
#294: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Apr 6, 2009
Go the the "Honors" link on the left, (just above the "Logout" button) and it will give you all 30 themes, and the top 3 winning puzzles of each. Beyond that, you have to go back manually and search one by one between puzzles # 3346 and #5509. Anyone else know any better way?
#295: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Apr 6, 2009
Jan is there a way to find all WC past puzzle???? since the search engine don't reconize WC as a word to find something
#296: Jennifer Jones (geekess) on Apr 10, 2009
Since the search won't work on WC, could you maybe replace WC in puzzle titles with something like "WEEKLYC" and then that would be searchable?? Don't know if that's possible with your database.
#297: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Apr 10, 2009
Since its Easter week-end and the fact that there is no easy way yet to find old WC puzzle ( except those in the honnor page) I'm extending this week theme for one more week so WC#31 end on sunday april 19

thank you all

#305: Naomi Millar (sailormewtwo) on May 4, 2009
Do want people to start renaming their old puzzles then?

Also, is it WCP or WPC?
#306: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on May 4, 2009
I would say WCP for "weekly challenge puzzle"
#307: Naomi Millar (sailormewtwo) on May 5, 2009
Ah, but Weekly Puzzle Challenge also makes sense!

It's a conundrum!
#308: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on May 5, 2009
You are right, but I figured since it was already the WC (for weekly challenge) that it made sense to put the P on the end. But we can do it your way. It really doesn't matter. And since I am the one who reinforced calling it WCP, they will probably go with WPC, just to spite me. :-)
#309: Jota (jota) on May 5, 2009
It's# xx WCP "Title"
#310: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 5, 2009

I especially liked the fact that most of them can be completed in 15 minutes or less. I like taking the time to do the larger ones (45 to 60 in dimensions), but they can take a few days to do, given my work schedule. I've even been found slumped over in the computer chair, asleep. But these are a bit rejuvenating.
#346: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 13, 2009
OK its 6:55 and I'm closing this amazing wcp week ( 2 weeks actually) with a grand total of 39 sumited puzzle ( 20 of those by a record breaking performance by Robyn)

#43 WCP: Somewhere out there

special rule this week:

#1: free interpretation of the title so lets have fun

#2: grid size must be 55 long by 25 high ( looking for panoramic kinda 16:9 image here)

#3: no colour restriction

#4: no white lign or no white colum at least one pixel must be in every lign or colum

have fun good luck surprise us
#348: Robyn Broyles (ginkgo100) on Sep 13, 2009
Thanks, Sylvain... but you know I withdrew one of those after it was determined to be one of the hardest logic-solvable puzzles ever, which was really a result of a mistake I made. Are you counting that one? I don't know the puzzle number off-hand, but the title was "Light."

It was a great theme for me in terms of the type of puzzle I enjoy making. though I'm surprised we did not see more by Gator. Teresa had some great ones and so did the other entrants.

I can guarantee I won't have 20 55x25 puzzles for this week's WCP. =)
#349: Gator (Gator) on Sep 14, 2009

Why is WCP #44 set to last for 3 weeks instead of 2 weeks? Also, in the Honors section, the honorable mention is wrong. I think the wrong puzzle number was entered and it was supposed to be #6725.
#354: Jota (jota) on Oct 12, 2009
Dear Robyn:
The WC #44 is three weeks because the honorable PRESIDENT of the judges is Canadian and it's Thanksgiving weekend for them, so he went on vacation. All the other judges (me) aren't enough to vote.
Thanks for noticing the error on the honor section, it's fixed.

#358: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Oct 12, 2009
Well thanks Robyn I add a wonderful week-end up in the mountain. We did a 5 km up trek from the button of the moutain up to the submit ( took 4 hour with the kids) a total of 875 m high ( soory you can tranlate from metric if you want I'm to tired to do so...lol)

The weather was nearly perfect even got a couple of snowflake late sunday ( just so the kid can say the saw they first snow of the season) And the colour in the tree were totally awsome to look at from the top.

Jota and I are ready to go back into our judging position next week, in the mean time I'm looking for more great puzzle to wcp#44 theme since we all got one week to go

At least one non-white pixel per each line or column.
#376: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jan 12, 2010
He is French. Cut him some slack. He means you can't have any rows (lines, "lign") or columns ("colum") that are not filled in with at least one non-white pixel.

I must have been typing this at the same time Jota posted her comment.

NEW THEME WCP 53: Circus, Carnaval and Amusement park

special rule: must use all color ( 5 including B&W)

ATTENTION: We are looking for intellignet use of the color and not coloring puzzle. I don't really need to see a blue man with a red dog on a green stage if you catch what I mean here

Many people around in here prefer B&W for this reason. What we are looking for is logic use of color to get great final result both in term of puzzle solving and final image.

This week theme is tailor made for something like that since circus, carnaval and amusemnent park are so rich in color, use in a way to catch the eye of the people attending the show or passing trought.

Hope you'll have fun and we can't wait to see those puzzle coming
#394: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 14, 2010
Still a week to enter in this theme competition. Don't give up we want new puzzle pass the word to other user cause we are in very low participation ratio for a long time now. Start to wonder if its worth continuing again.....

#396: Teresa K (fasstar) on Feb 15, 2010
My life and my job consist of mostly crisis control and the rewards are few and far between. The weekly contest gives me something to look forward to, even if I hardly ever win anymore. I don't mind losing to creative. original artwork, and the competition brings out the best in people. For those who have not entered before, it is so much fun, whether you win or not. It's my R&R. I wish we had it EVERY week! :-)
#397: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Feb 15, 2010
Yeah, Sylvain, make it go back to weekly. :-)
#398: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 15, 2010
No chance of it going back to a weekly basic rigth now and that for two reason

First I don't have the time that it would require of me to look at every puzzle each week and I'm working on sunday now so the week of the judging I can't even eat before I do it cause I'm arriving at home only couple of minute before 7 pm. The load of responsability that it ask me is just to big rigth now for me to put it back on a weekly basic like it use to be.

Second we only get about 5 to six puzzle each theme and that for 14 days competition. If I cut that to 7 days as before I will get what 3 or 4 puzzle and two of them will be by Kai or Teresa so I won't be able to have a complete podium.

If the participation raise up and I can manage to have more time ( or more help since its only Jota and me rigth now) I would consider bringning it back to one theme a week but not rigth now
#399: Jota (jota) on Feb 15, 2010

WCP56 theme

Awful movie

We had such a great result with last week theme that I decide to continue in the same idea, but this time as suggest by Bluepaint a couple of week ago lets focus on awful movie.

You know the type of movie that are praticly toture to go througt. Or the kind of movie so bad they became cult hit on the internet. We want to see wich really bad film make the top of your list.

For any help finding a film the is real bad you can check the razzie winner from this list but they're so many other film being worth the title of worst movie ever that I doudt you really need it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_considered_the_worst

Before letting you go on with your creation process I like to remind you all that taste are a personal choice and ask you to take no offence if your favorite film of all time is someone else worst film. I know how passionate some people are about certain film and I don't want to start a war here.

I don't get it Tom, would you please explain ?
#422: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 25, 2010
Jota: i don't understand why y'all would extent the time period and allow others to compete, when you & Sylvain could have done the judging yesterday, today or tomorrow and let us know. I don't mean to be offending to you or Sylvain but all competitions have a start and finish period and thats that. I'm beginning to feel sorry i said anything now. I JUST want to solve & create puzzles. I'll let it go if you will also. I'm a senior citizen and rather not have this aggravation. huggggsssss
P.s. this still is the best puzzle site (of any kind) on the internet.
#423: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 25, 2010
Sylvain, as a senior citizen and fellow competitor, I would like to say I am not bothered at all by your need to be flexible. I know you are short a judge. I know that you created this contest to make this site more fun for us. I know that it takes a lot of time to do this in addition to your real work. I know that you are a parent of foster/adopted children. As a fellow foster/adoptive parent, I know that some of these children have issues that require more of our time and energy than we can afford to give sometimes. I am glad that you have your priorities straight and do not make this contest your number one responsibility. It's just a pastime.

I have had great fun with this contest, and it inspires me to improve my creative skills, and I thank you for that. Sylvain, you are gifted with kindness, tact, and wit, and you have been most generous with your time in running this contest. I know I am not alone in sharing my appreciation for you and Jota keeping the contest going with your interesting themes and clever interview questions.
#424: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on May 25, 2010
I simply extent the time period because I was not at home during the week end and my free time during the week is minimal.

We have extend the time period in the past for diffrend reason ( limit on a holiday, not enought puzzle enter, judge not available etc) it was never an issue since I don't really think that nobody really take the competion brought by the point system too seriously. Its there only as a fun plus, but the real design behind the WCP was to help people create medium difficulty puzzle in a medium grid size so the maximun of people could enjoy them.

Tom if you feel the time extend was not fair to you and you decide to withdraw your puzzle I'm sorry for you but I don't really care I won't consider your puzzle and that a closed subject. I didn't think that extending for a week since I was not able to get online on sunday would make such a buzz.

A final note as Teresa mention it we are a judge short. I pass the invitation a while ago with no result so I try it again here. If any of you wanna be part of the judging team it will only take about 15-25 min of your time a sunday out of two. Let me know if you're interested
#425: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 25, 2010
Sylvain, as much as I love being a winner, I really don't need any more points. I would be happy to be a judge, if the judging time did not conflict with my obligation to work at my kids' house until 8 pm. Arizona time is same as California time in the summer and Colorado time in the winter. That might be too late for you. If you want to do the judging a little later on Sundays, I can do it!
#426: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on May 26, 2010
Thanks teresa but it seem like you'll have to continue adding point since its a litle bit late for us eastcoaster...lol

#427: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 26, 2010
Sylvain: I tried to drop this subject to no avail. Please accept my appology and allow me to leave my puzzle in the competition. Also.... what hour is needed on those sundays? I might be interested after this up-coming decision.
#428: Kai-Uwe Zickerick (conzick) on May 26, 2010

It usually take about max 30 min of our time when there is many puzzle enter but most of the time its a 10-15 min think.

When we do not agree fully from the start we twnd to have a point system so each judge choose his 4 pick from 1 to 4 place winner get 5 second 3 3rd 2 fourth 1 and we add on all the score to determine wich puzzle get the top 3 place. But most of the time only telling each other wich you like the most and why make for the easy decission from the majority of the judge.

#430: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 26, 2010
Sylain: 7pm is not a problem for me, i live in N.C.... i don't have g-talk, but guess i can get it...i only have yahoo messenger right now.
Soooooooooo please think of me as a contender for judging these wonderful puzzle/pictures.
#431: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on May 26, 2010

oh man! :) ...i had a puzzle that i was working on for the contest, but ran out of time and let it sit. i worked on it as a puzzle to submit just for fun, but didn't quite get it solvable. i don't frequent the forums very often and didn't know that the contest had been extended until just now...with 35 minutes to the deadline...and probably two hours worth of work left to do on it. oh well. cookie crumbles...

#461: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jul 31, 2010
No, I'm not boycotting the contest. I'm tired lately from having to work way more hours than usual. And I'm just not inspired yet, or maybe I'm just not motivated. I am certainly enjoying the creativity shown by other puzzle makers though. I always enjoy the unique ideas you come up with for themes. Keep 'em coming!

Sylvain, this is a terrific theme. My mind is reeling with all the possibilities. I don't have as much time lately as I would like to create a really good puzzle for the WCP. But I see that there are already 10 entries, and we're only half way to the deadline. I'm happy to see so much creativity and good competition. I'm sure you will find some worthy winners among them. I will enjoy solving all of them, when I have a chance. The WCP continues to be a highlight of my experience here on WEBPBN. :-)

NEW THEME

WCP 66: Jan trought my eye

ok let explain here. Since we reach puzzle number 10 000 ( and even more) in the past week, I tought it will be cool to take a look back at the beginning.

Since it all start with Jan idea and creation here what we propose you this week. Go in the find puzzles page type Jan wolter and check all the amazing puzzle Jan did in here, choose one and do YOUR version of this puzzle.

In this area of re-make and remix its time we do an "hommage" for the man who make this all possible in the first place.

Standard rules apply but please put the number of the original Jan puzzle in the description

Hope you'll have fun re-creating Jan work and lets go for puzzle 20 000 in the near futur.

Sylvain and the wcp team
#472: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 22, 2010
bravo, Sylvain
#473: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Aug 22, 2010
I like this theme. I have done at least two versions of Jan's puzzles, albeit unwittingly. Now to try to see through his eyes through my eyes wittingly ... er, yea.

For those who haven't had a chance to work the "Find Puzzles" page yet, you search on a person's user ID rather than their name.

So for Jan Wolter (Jan) you would enter Jan in the "Author ID:" and for me you'd enter infrapinklizzard rather than Joe.

And I assume it has to be a new puzzle? For example my "#8142: Easter" vs Jan's "#391: A Long Face on Easter" would be cheating? (Or my "#8099: Hang the Expense" vs "#531: Hitched", or ...) ^_^
#474: Liz P (Lizteach) on Aug 22, 2010

WCP72: Bob Globe-trotting adventure #1 : Canada

ok here what its going to be: Bob just win the lottery and decide to go on a globe trotting adventure around the globe. So each theme in that categorie going to be a countrey Bob's visiting. Since he is going to be in the country for two week he can go all over the place (no money issue remember...lol)

The only stipulation is that the puzzle should represented a picture Bob as taken during his time in the country. You get to decide the type of picture he made or the coloration he decide to use.

Ok so since Bob live in Montreal he decide to first visit his own country so from ocean to ocean let visit Canada

by the way I heard he is a great photograph so make him proud....lol

A ton!! I didn't know puzzles weight some much! Let me know if it's too heavy a load. :)

***
Is there a minimum number of raters on a puzzle to make it elegIble for a challenge? I'm simply asking because in the case a puzzle is available late in the week and very few (or none) rate it. What happens?
#502: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 17, 2010

What would you do if you only had 1 or 2 entries in a challenge?
#507: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Nov 20, 2010

haha

Would you only give a 1st prize if only 1 person submitted puzzles for a challenge?!?
#509: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Nov 20, 2010
no they would probably extend the contest another week or change themes
just my guess
#510: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Nov 20, 2010
We had to extendf in the past for a scecific theme during x-mas season if I remember well.As for other mention anormaly it never happen yet so I'll cross that bridge if I ended in front of it...

they was pass theme when participation was lower or even quality of puzzle below norm but we choose the 3 best of what we got.

Sorry, perhaps an out of place question, but...where is the Christmas theme since this two weeks (actually, looks like three) covers Dec. 25?

I mean, Bob could visit the North Pole and get ready for Christmas, and go to India in the new year. =D
#525: Jota (jota) on Dec 12, 2010
We'll do a three weeks challenge this time not to interfere with the holidays.
#526: (Private) (Cyclone) on Dec 12, 2010
Okie, but no holiday theme? That's the point, I get the three weeks. =)
#527: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 13, 2010
Cyclone, if you'd like to solve some Christmas and holiday puzzles, check out the entries for WC#16 and WC#17, and all the non-entry puzzles during December 2008. Start with puzzle #4192 and end with #4498, and find all the titles in between. That was a great year for Christmas puzzles. Enjoy. :-)
#528: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 13, 2010
Cyclone I choose not to included a Christmas thme this year cause it been done in the past. The wcp is running on is third years and we pretty much did all the classic hollyday theme like x-mas, halloween, St-valentine etc

The idea behind the WCP is to give puzzle creator a basic theme to go on when creating. I'm pretty sure no one need any advise or idea on what to do for a X-mas puzzle.

Plus check out topic 257 (the wcp catalog) to check out all past entry for each past theme.
#529: (Private) (Cyclone) on Dec 13, 2010
I thought that might have been the reason, Sylvain, I just wondered if a trip to the North Pole had been an oversight in the journeys. =) I was looking forward to a Christmas puzzle theme contest, and am sure some had puzzles ready to go for the possibility of the theme recurring in B&K's travels. Maybe an Indian Christmas tagline will come up for some of these puzzles, too!

Teresa, I actually am already aware not only of WC#16-17, but also of #49 (Winter Wonderland). Sadly I will probably spend more time and interest on those three sets instead of the trip to India in these next couple of weeks; maybe I'll get around to the India puzzles eventually after the holidays. Obviously I was away during those contests (first came in 2006 but lost touch with the site after a few months; I actually commented on puzzle #14); I'm sure anyone here during those contests has already solved the puzzles. =)

I have two more puzzles to try for WC#2, then I'll skip ahead to #16-17. I've printed some of those today, it's a very snowy day here and I certainly am not going anywhere so it'll keep me busy while looking at radar shots to try to get my family home.

To qualify, the puzzle also has to meet certain criteria, such as "no more than 80 rows and columns. So the puzzle could be 40x40, 45x35, or 60x20" - the rules are explained in the Honors tab at the left.
#535: Kadou (Kadou) on Dec 17, 2010
Thanks, but that's not what I want to know.
What I really want to know is: How much does a puzzle need to be compliant with the theme to qualify? Or does every puzzle properly named and sized qualifiy?
#536: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 17, 2010
we are very open minded and have a great sense of hunour if its twiated but kinda logical ( like your credit card puzzle) its in. In past we had user play on word with the theme and always accept the puzzle. It have to have a certain way of fitting in the theme even if this way is a little far from the obvious

#546: (Private) (Cyclone) on Jan 2, 2011
Okie...

I know this is extremely old, but just took on puzzle #3356 again, which was the runner-up in WC#1. I question how a puzzle that has multiple solutions and requires guessing be considered the second best puzzle in the contest when others are logically solvable and deserve it more. It's a shame as it's a nice image, but a little more work on her arm and a moving of one of her eyes would have made it solvable without guessing - and a worthy candidate to even win.
#547: Byrdie (byrdie) on Jan 2, 2011
Check the honors tab/list, Cyclone. I don't see where you find it as the runner up. The list I see has 1) 3349, 2) 3380 and 3) 3352. If 3356 is unsolvable (I admit to not having tried) it wouldn't be considered.

Tom...no, sorry, I'm not a puzzle police. I just misread the puzzle number and saw an identical title ("WC#1 ENTRY") listed as runner-up. I was trying to figure out why an unsolvable puzzle was runner-up but I misread the puzzle number. Please ignore the query, thanks for pointing it out Martin. =)

So now we're off to Thailand...I used to chat with someone who lives there. I'll be curious what we have coming from there. =)

Send in the Clowns

Ok a little diffrent this time from the pasty few. B&K decide to rent a little villa on the Indian Ocean and take two week off from they world travelling adventure. So we at the WCP had to find something else to puzzle about in this hiatus. Not knowing what to do we follow the old circus rule and we decide to SEND IN THE CLOWN

So its all about clown, funny clown, fat clown, skinny clown, tall clown, short clown, sad clown, evil clown, animal clown, anything-else clown

Its CLOWN time do I need to say more...hope not. So I stop clowning around and let you to your futur clown

see you in two week
#559: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jan 28, 2011
Just like that all those amazing clown puzzle and with the contest ending tomorrow nigth no Prince Clown of Crime????

no jack Nickelson, no Heath Ledger, no comic version

I need my jocker guys...... He is the ultimate evil clown after all

This is a suggestion btw not a command or a sure shot at the top 3 neither
#560: Jota (jota) on Jan 28, 2011

#562: Liz P (lizteach) on Jan 29, 2011
LOL, I'm glad to be of service. Even though I was not happy with my Heath Ledger; I kept on having to "fix" him to make him solvable, and the final image did not make me happy. :P

BTW, I totally enjoyed this particular competition; my mom, who is a clinical psychologist, is coulrophobic, and I didn't get nearly the exposure to clowns that I should have as a child, LOL. So now, I think of clowns as mostly evil (although recently we went to the Big Apple Circus, and I LOVED the clowns there), and I love exploring both the entertaining and dark sides of clowns.

Beware of the Butterfly effect

Ok so we take a break from Bob and Kate litle adventure. They decide to go back to Canada see they relatives and friends.

So what we are going to do this week is giving you a time machine. You may use it to withness or to interfere in some meaningfull event in history.

Anything you want to see or change is open for you.

Can be off personal use or humanity changing it doesnt matter.

As an exemple I would go back to be able to attent a Door concert. Or I would prevent the accident between all-star goalie Patrick Roy and coach Tremblay to happen so that Roy never leave the Montreal Canadien. See its not that big but that what I'll do.

You can go save Julius Ceasar wrong being murder, go kill Jack the ripper before he attack all tose girl. Mett John Lennon and told him to be more cautious with autograph seeker..... anything

have fun seeing or changing history

#589: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 27, 2011

WCP#82 new theme

Conceptual art

Since they are back in Canada Bob and Kate restart doing thing they love. Kate enter herself in a conceptual art class. Her first homework was creating image with a bue square in it. The square can be full or hollow, as long as its sqaure, blue and it fit the final image its ok.

Now let help Kate with her class. 40X40 fix grid (her sheet)
no theme restriction, no color restriction but must have a perfect blue aquare in it

minimum size of the square is 4 pixel (2X2)
border of image square without real meaning ( 40X1 on all size) won't be acept either.

So create something with a blue square in it.

This week theme will go 3 week since its Easter in two. so its on until Sunday may 1rst 19 pm eastern time
#593: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Apr 10, 2011

Also, comment #52 is an "agreed" on 20 minimum on the small side and 60 maximum on the long side, so that the puzzles don't get too long and skinny, but then that is tossed in Comment #63 in rules recap where 1x79 is specifically called out as acceptable. Actually I forgot until just now, the rules are listed at the top of the Honors tab...no super-skinny limits there....so nevermind.

just another idea for WCP #100 in early 2012 we should ask people to submit theme idea than take like the 5 best in the opinion of the judge and do a poll in wich user can decide what will the theme of the 100th contest should be.

WCP#100: The User's choices: ____ ____ ____ ____

could be cool in my humble no longer judge opinion.
#669: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 3, 2011
Hey, Sylvain, you are no longer a judge? But it's YOUR contest? I guess you are relieved now you don't have to judge this week especially, because there are sooooooo many entries. Aldege has been on a roll with this theme. :-D

I like the idea of asking users for theme ideas, but I think it would be wise to have only one theme per contest. We'll give you so many theme ideas you will never run out. :-)
#670: Byrdie (byrdie) on Dec 3, 2011
My suggestion - the famous opening line for Snoopy:

#671: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 3, 2011
Teresa I had to step back a few month ago since my schedule don't allow me time enough to really enjoy it. It was becoming a burden to find time to check all puzzle and doing all the update. Good think both Maria and Tom accept to continue with it.

I'm keeping the door open as for a possible return in the futur if time allow it. In the mean time I still come in here a few time a week to check on my old friend and to see how the WCP goes without me.

Unfortunaly you have to let your baby out of the craddle one day or the other and that the situation rigth now. But I'm so proud of how its been going since my departure.

It was so smooth that many didn't even see the diffrence that how good my follow judge are. Once again a big thanks to both Tom and Maria for keeping it alive.
#672: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 3, 2011
I like it, Martin. I have an idea for my puzzle already! :-)

My suggestions include:

Favorite Childhood Memory

What I Want to Be When I Grow Up

My Pet Peeve

Best Vacation Ever

What's Hiding in My Closet

My Favorite Board Game

TV Episodes From the Past

What About Bob (and Kate)? (Did they run out of money yet?)

How Does Your Garden Grow? (Mary, Mary, quite contrary)

WEBPBN is a place people come to relax and escape and have fun. So I think it's important to keep the themes upbeat and light. :-)

#673: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Dec 3, 2011
I think those are all great suggestions, Teresa.. I like the Favorite Childhood Memory idea.. or What I want to be when I grow up.. and what's hiding in my closet.. ;)

Hmm, let's see.. 100, that's a pretty significant number. We could do:

If I had an extra $100 in my pocket, what would I use it for?

What I think the world will be like in 100 years from now.

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times.

What I spent my last $100 on...

#677: Kit E. Katz (hello) on Dec 5, 2011
The word "servants" has such negative connotations, how about "minions"? ;)
#678: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Dec 5, 2011
BA-NA-NA!!!
#679: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 5, 2011
:-D @ Kit and David.
#680: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 5, 2011
Ok I'll judge #100 in 2012

Tom I like servant ..... maybe it's my God syndrome kicking in again ( must not forget medecine....)

lol
#681: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 5, 2011
Jan I don't know if you can change it but Marie-Louise is record on 2 name Marz and Marz71 so in the WCP ranking one have 41 points the other have 30 pts so she should be at 71 pts total. Can you mix up both of her total so she get her rigth position
#682: Jota (jota) on Dec 5, 2011
More than that Sylvain, you get to pick the theme for the 100th.
#683: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 6, 2011
Well Ok I'll try to think of something truly awsome....
#684: Jota (jota) on Dec 6, 2011
Or pick among the suggestions?
#685: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 7, 2011
not sure got an Idea probably going to send you a mail soon
about it
#686: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 29, 2011
To Jota and Tom: Did we agreed on this ????

Ok no problem I'll check the wcp #99 puzzle so I could choose a winner and in the same way the theme of WCP #100
#687: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 29, 2011
It's really like two contests at the same time: best puzzle and best theme. Perhaps Sylvain could choose the best theme for #100, and Jota and Tom could judge the puzzles themselves for the three best puzzles according to the contest criteria already established: image + solving experience.
#688: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Dec 29, 2011
thats how jota & I thought it was, T
we judge the contest and Sylvain makes the choice of theme
.....and then Sylvain is asked to join us, only once, to judge the wcp#100 contest...then back to hibernation he goes :)
#689: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 29, 2011
not hibernating, still eating ....way too much lol
#690: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Dec 29, 2011
Sylvain is much like the good china...worth a lot, very nice and pulled out of hiding for big events.
#691: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Dec 29, 2011
sounds like a theme David :)
#692: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Dec 30, 2011
lol

#693: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jan 13, 2012
Ok the WCP just turn 100 this week. It took us a couple of years to achieve this and that awsome that it continue this long and this strong since day one. With many new members entering this website every weeks and playing in the wcp there are mostly past theme that new user would have appreciate participating in. So here a little poll that COULD serve as a future theme for the wcp

What old theme you wish to see re-use in the WCP ?

Maybe ( and that maybe since I no longer control the decision made in the wcp) it can bring back to live the most popular theme from past aera

Have fun
#694: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jan 13, 2012
You don't have to start repeating themes yet! There's plenty that have not been done yet. Didn't we once have a suggestion request? I can't find it, but I know there were some cool ideas that I haven't seen used yet.

Here are a few:

What's hiding in your closet?

I'm Game! (favorite board game)

Favorite childhood memory

Home Sweet Home (something special about your town/city)

World Expo (in South Korea this summer)

Summer Olympics (in London this year)

NASA (The Rover will land on Mars this year)

Bob and Kate (lots of choices here - at home, having a baby, go shopping, out on the town, 2nd honeymoon - I miss those guys)

And I really like the travelling gnome idea

And of course my idea, 100 years ago... :-)

#695: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jan 13, 2012
Teresa you are right but the idea came to me after seeing Tom King invitation to movie theme puzzle ( wich was wcp #1).

As far as the theme list you just mention they all are interesting.

I think that 101 is in the box right now plus Tom's traveling gnome will probably be 102 or something so that open thing up starting at 103.... will see
#696: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jan 13, 2012
I wanna know what Teresa has hindin in her closet
#697: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jan 13, 2012
Well, I already showed you my drawers, Tom. :-D

#9465, #9467, #9473, #9496, #9508, and #9547.

#698: Tom King (sgusa) on Jan 22, 2012
Never knew this forum existed. The instructions for many puzzles refer us here for rules. I guess I need to cross reference between puzzle #, date, and specific rules?
#699: Jota (jota) on Jan 22, 2012
They are also listed on the Honors tab Tom.
#700: Tom King (sgusa) on Jan 22, 2012
Many of them refer to this forum for specific rules. I have read the red notes since November when I started creating them. Many of the older puzzles refer to this forum for specifics.
#701: Gator (gator) on Jan 23, 2012
Look at post 632 on this thread.
#702: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jan 23, 2012
I'm really wishing that the puzzle links on the Honors page had the mouse-over context menu so I could peek at solutions from one page.

I'll give someone a dollar to make a page that shows images of the winning solutions for all 100?
#703: Jota (jota) on Jan 23, 2012
@ Tom it's a bit challenging but worth it, i hope!
@ David LOL
#704: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Jan 23, 2012
I think we may need an extra week or so, to give us time to solve all the previous 100 winning puzzles!
#705: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jan 23, 2012
lmbo Kristen
#706: Tom King (sgusa) on Jan 23, 2012
As I did #1, it was pretty easy to see only house rules applied (and it was the Wild West, then). Post 632 refers to #88 going forward. I would hate to have someone disqualified because they missed, "Must include one red pixel" someplace in this thread..
#707: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jan 23, 2012
@Tom

after I left the wcp (no more free time) Jota and Tom decide to cut the double posting and stop writing special rule directly in the description on the honor tap so for 1-88 just check my post with NEW THEME in it. It will give you any specific rule we decide to throw in. for 89-100 just check the red description directly in the honor tab. That way you should be able to track any specific criteria esk for a theme in particuliar

hope it will help

Weekly Challenge #102: What WE can do without webpbn ...
Is that a "we" as individuals or as a collective?

Also, will there be a third member judging future WCs?
#709: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Feb 6, 2012
Kadou...this was my idea and I was thinking WE as each we who cares to compete. The other does sound like fun.
WE: Jota & I are taking applications for a 3rd judge.
#710: Kadou (Kadou) on Feb 6, 2012
You have been two for a while now, and it seems difficult to recruit a third judge. So, I was thinking the third judge could be a "guest" judge. Someone who would be part of the judging panel for a given Challenge without "permanent" status. An active player who could prepare theme and rules for one WC where he/she is available and willing to judge.
What do you think?
#711: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Feb 6, 2012
I'll leave it up to Jota...but frankly,,, i don't like a part time judge...sorry Kadou
#712: Jota (jota) on Feb 7, 2012
We do need a third or more permanent judges, it's a difficult process, believe it or not, sometimes we have to do it over the phone, or adapt the dates because one of us is not available, etc. it's becoming kind of tense when we have to travel or are busy.To fit a non-permanent person on this will make it even worse.
Then we have the times when we are in disagreement ... Tempers fly (JK) but the system we had for resolving conflicts among 3 does not apply among 2. Another difficult aspect is to keep the focus, hence the mistake David found in that perfect blue square puzzle.

I understand where you are coming from, so let's continue to try to find a solution.
#713: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Feb 7, 2012
my solution is a caraffe of merlot :)
#714: Teresa K (fasstar) on Feb 7, 2012
I would like to apply for the job. I can be available every other Sunday.

As a judge, I would be committed to solving each contest entry, and to judge them based on:
* image (quality, detail, recognizable)
* solving experience (not too hard, not too easy)
* creativity (original idea, clever title, etc.)
* extra points for that "Aha!" experience we all love

And... I think I can come up with some pretty good themes. Anyone object to the ideas I posted above in #694?

#715: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 7, 2012
Hurray I try to convince you to be judge awhile ago but you could not take it at the time. Great addition to the judging panel. Only bemol is the lost of a great competitor in the WCP.

I'm sure you 3 will do amazing thing and assure it will continue to grow and bring enjoyment to all user here in webpbn.com

thank you T (and as always to Maria and Tom too) for keeping this so alive and so great.

BTW Tom I love you 3 ( or 4 or 5) Q interview love the humor the personnality you bring to it.

#716: Kadou (Kadou) on Feb 7, 2012
Awesome! Thanks Teresa! I know it's not an easy task, so... good luck! :)
#717: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Feb 8, 2012
you got my vote T.... Jota will tell you what program to download to meet with us ....hugsssssssss
#718: Kai-Uwe Zickerick (conzick) on Feb 8, 2012
Congratulation, Judges!
You are truly not three of a kind, but three great personalities for a great future of the competition.
#719: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Feb 8, 2012
terrific idea!
#720: Jota (jota) on Feb 8, 2012
Welcome Teresa!
We "meet" on Yahoo messenger at 7PM Eastern time.
Well see you on the 15th.
If you have any questions email me please.
#721: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Feb 9, 2012
T...you need to contact me via e-mail and tell me your screen name so i can accept you as a friend and then can start our conference room.
#722: Tom King (sgusa) on Feb 9, 2012
Awesome, Teresa. Thanks for doing this.
#723: Kadou (Kadou) on Feb 20, 2012
Some topic ideas I just had...
"What makes you...
laugh/cry/happy/sad/surprized/scared/angry/hungry/excited/upset/nervous/feel loved/aroused/any other emotion you can think of.
#724: Teresa K (fasstar) on Feb 20, 2012
I like your idea, Kadou. Thanks.
#725: Kadou (Kadou) on Mar 5, 2012
What a WC theme!
"men...what would you like to see different in women....women: what would you like to see different in men?"

This is a woman's dream challenge... There are so many things that women would like changed about men, while men see women as near perfect.

Feels like a battle of the sexes! 3> vs }p
hehe! :)
#726: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 6, 2012
I'll take the blame or credit for this one, Kadou :D
#727: Teresa K (fasstar) on Mar 18, 2012
Well, this turned out to be a better contest than I thought it would be. Great entries! Very difficult to judge this time. In fact, if all three of us would have had our way, you all would have been winners!
#728: Tom King (sgusa) on Mar 20, 2012
Kind of waiting for the "Roamin' Gnome...?"
#729: Teresa K (fasstar) on Mar 20, 2012
I like that one too. Let's see what the other judges think.
#730: Teresa K (fasstar) on Apr 1, 2012
WCP has been discontinued.

Well, I've only been a judge for a short while, and now the contest is no more. You can't believe how tough that job is. Everyone argues, no one can agree on a winner. And there are complaints that the quality of the contest entries aren't that great. So we just decided that we're not going to do it anymore.

Sorry folks. That's the way it goes.
#731: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Apr 1, 2012
and Teresa outta be spanked :(
#732: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Apr 1, 2012
April Fools!

Having been a prior judge, I KNOW for a fact that your sentence "Everyone argues, no one can agree on a winner" is not true.

Good one, though. :-)
#733: Teresa K (fasstar) on Apr 1, 2012
Maybe things were different when you were a judge, Adam. But the past several weeks have been very uncomfortable in the judges' court. One week someone just doesn't show. Another week, some one is out of town. It's like the commitment just isn't there. One judge has a hot temper, another judge has a potty mouth, and I have been referred to as a total b*tch.

Someone complained to Sylvain, and he said "Well, let's just call it quits, then. It's over!"

You may think it's a joke, but we sure aren't laughing. Bad timing I guess.
#734: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Apr 1, 2012
I'l be a good lad here and confirm ITS TRUE WCP is over

not....

sorry I forgot it was my duty to upload the winner and new theme tonight
#735: Teresa K (fasstar) on Apr 1, 2012
Aw, heck. Adam was right. April Fools.

Tom and Jota are super fun to judge with. It really is hard though to pick only three winners, with so many imaginative puzzle creators.
#736: Teresa K (fasstar) on Apr 1, 2012
Glückwünsche to Conzick, who now holds the top rank on the honors list!
#737: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Apr 2, 2012

#738: Kai-Uwe Zickerick (conzick) on Apr 3, 2012
Thank you. Vielen Dank, Teresa!
#739: Tom King (sgusa) on Apr 12, 2012
Make them all judges. Then, I'll have a chance. Kadou, Conzick, David, Brian, Kristen, et cetera... There should be 200 judges, and one contestant...

Me
#740: Jota (jota) on Apr 12, 2012
;-)
#741: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 13, 2012
This contest requires landscape format. That means it has to be wider than it is high. For example, it can be 50 wide and 30 high, or 45 wide and 35 high, or 40 wide and 25 high. Just don't go crazy and make it 65 wide and 15 high, okay? 50x30 would be best. :-)
#742: Kadou (Kadou) on Jun 11, 2012
WC # 111...
Can a puzzle be in only red or only blue? Or does it have be in both red and blue? I imagine white is ok... :P
#743: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 11, 2012
both Kadou ....15x15 only also...and yes the white base is a must
#744: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jun 11, 2012
IE: Red White and Blue
#745: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jun 25, 2012
Just a little word to say how a great job our 3 officiating judges are doing. Great job to all 3 of you. Love to way you continue to play with my "baby". I still trying to keep an eye on it from time to time and I love everything you do with it.

So once again Bravo and keep up the good job

your friend Sylvain
#746: Jota (jota) on Jun 25, 2012
It's becoming harder and harder, we keep trying but it's very difficult my friend!
#747: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jun 25, 2012
Sylvain, did you take a look at all the puzzles in the past contest? These creators are developing so much talent and they just keep getting better!
#748: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jun 26, 2012
I enjoy it so far. Drop in sometime Sylvain and input your ideas.
#749: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Jun 26, 2012
Yes T I had the chance to peek at some new puzzle in the few last WCP and it must be so hard to choose from having so many hight caliber entry avery week.

But as hard as it is for you 3 its a great thing for the website and the community and that what the WCP was set up for at first, helping people find idea to let they imagination and talent do the rest and create new amazing puzzle for all others to enjoy. Way back then when I start in here thet was like 3-5 people posting all the puzzle, then I start trying to do some, at the same time Marz was starting to, then came Adam and the rest follow with the wcp giving them a start in puzzle creation. Guess my crazy idea work well.

We should not forgive to thank once again Jan who was cool enougth to let me a stage in wich I could set that thing up creating the honor tab and all the pages for the wcp.
#750: Tom King (sgusa) on Jul 2, 2012
Everyone did a fabulous job! It is a vibrant, fun community. Thanks, Tom
#751: Jota (jota) on Mar 3, 2013
Just a thought: WCP # 127 Only three contestants, which is not strange since out of the last 100 puzzles on the site, Kurt has created 39, Al 23 and Tom King 4, apart from them, the only other "productive" creator is Norma with 13. That's a total of 79% of the puzzles.
#752: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 6, 2013
The "puzzler" on NPR's Car Talk takes the summer off. Maybe our puzzle would also enjoy a little time away.
#753: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Mar 6, 2013
Good point.
#754: Ruby Hammer (rubyqhammer) on Mar 6, 2013
According to the Honors button this is where the contest theme is supposed to be announced, but I am not seeing anything. Why the jump from post #750 in Jul 2012 to #751 in Mar 2013?
#755: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Mar 7, 2013
They stopped posting here; now the contest rules are at the Honors tab, listed by date, unless more information is needed.
#756: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 17, 2013
WE could sure use another judge for the contest. This week we couldn't agree so we did, for the first time ever, make 2 winners. Please contact Jota or me for consideration.
#757: Tom King (sgusa) on May 29, 2013
Not interested in multi-color or large puzzles. Kristen (both of them), Kurt, Norma, Aldege, Joe, Dave, Brian, Travis, both Teresas would be outstanding. Forgetting one or two and apologize. One used to be a judge... Ask Kai or Kadou. They have the most honors and a bit of a chip. Might be the perfect way to mend fences and get them active here. Just my thoughts...Tom
#758: Jota (jota) on Jun 23, 2013
Sorry again for posting early, still in Europe and crazy about the time. Last one ... for now!
#759: cathy mcweeney (catty) on Feb 5, 2019
when does the new weekly challange post and how do i enter
#760: Jota (jota) on Feb 5, 2019
We have not done it in a while. Check the Honors tab on the left.
#761: cathy mcweeney (catty) on Oct 27, 2022
DO WE STILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS
#762: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Oct 27, 2022
I would love to see it back again!
#763: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Oct 27, 2022
If we wanted it back as a competition, we'd have to get some judges on board who were willing to put the time in every <challenge period> to solve the puzzles and judge them.

Another possibility is to just issue a prompt as a challenge each week. This could provide inspiration for puzzlemakers, but no ranking would be awarded.
#764: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Oct 28, 2022
I'm cool with the regular challenge topic, because I have a hard time coming up with ideas. Lately, I've just done riffs off of other people's puzzles (or titles).
#765: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Oct 28, 2022
I like the idea of having a prompt.
#766: Jota (jota) on Oct 28, 2022
If you need a judge, I'm in.
#767: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Oct 28, 2022
What I liked most was to see the different interpretations of the same subject.
#768: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 21, 2024
Okay! The new plan is to have a theme to inspire puzzle-making! No winners or losers, just an idea that might inspire creative puzzle making.

I'll add themes while this is getting re-started, but in the future I would like to find some other people to be in charge of picking the themes.

The first new theme is:

WebPBN will be 20 years old on March 24, 2024. Let's celebrate with 20x20 puzzles on the topic of WebPBN's 20th Birthday!

Please add #180 to the puzzle's name, so people can find them. Thanks!
#769: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 28, 2024
This week's theme is:

Pick someone who has solved more than 1000 puzzles but rarely posted anything and illustrate their name.

Tip: You can click on Users and then click on Puzzles Solved to find users who have solved a lot of puzzles.

Thanks to Yonah Kondor for the idea!

Please add WCP #181 to the name of the puzzle, so people can find it.
#770: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Mar 28, 2024
Is there a size or color limitation?
#771: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 28, 2024
Nope!
#772: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 29, 2024
I should clarify that for "making puzzles about people who have rarely posted anything" I was thinking especially of people who haven't posted many (or any) comments. Though the puzzles that are already posted are fantastic too!!
#773: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 29, 2024
Picking themes for the WCP is harder than I expected!

I was thinking that WCP #181 would be a way to welcome and celebrate people who might feel shy about commenting. I am worried that the entries could come out sounding like a person is not creating enough puzzles, and that is definitely not what I was aiming for! I hope people know that whether or not they ever create any puzzles, they are welcome here.

#774: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Mar 29, 2024
Oh ok, is there a way to see how many people are or aren't commenting?
#775: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Mar 30, 2024
That is a good question! One option would be to look at the list of which active users have been here the longest, and if someone is *not* listed there, that means they have never posted a puzzle or a comment. That list is here:
https://webpbn.com/read.cgi?type=T&id=1070

In Google Chrome, you can search for a particular person in the list by doing control-F.
#776: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 4, 2024
This week's theme is Files. Maximum puzzle size 15x15.
#777: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 5, 2024
And, of course, please put WCP #182 at the end of the puzzle's title. Thanks!
#778: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 11, 2024
New theme: TV episodes from the past. Thanks to Teresa for the idea! Please put WCP #183 at the end of the title.
#779: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 12, 2024
I should clarify that the theme was from a long-ago comment that Teresa made in this thread. I have not heard from her in a long time and am worried, and hope that she is okay.
#780: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Apr 12, 2024
I sent her a msg on FB, we'll see if I get a response.
#781: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 18, 2024
New theme: Kristen's and David's weddings!

Puzzles must have 2:1 dimensions -- for example 15x30 or 10x5.

Please put WCP #184 in the title.
#782: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Apr 18, 2024
Aww! Not everyone is on Facebook, though. For those of you who can't see my photos, we got married last Saturday at the Birmingham Zoo, up by the elephants. The weather was perfect, and the elephants came right up to where the guests were (while Nick & I were off having pictures taken).
#783: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Apr 18, 2024
Oh yay! I love double weddings... Great idea.
#784: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Apr 19, 2024
Very sweet of you to do this topic! My fiancee would be jealous that Kristen got married by elephants, she loves them...especially Sri Lankan elephants because that's where her parents came from. If anybody needs context/inspiration for my wedding, we are getting married in October at the Mint Museum in uptown Charlotte, NC. There's a current picture of us in my bio if you click my user name :)
#785: Jota (jota) on Apr 25, 2024
New theme: Best Vacation spot! WCP #185
#786: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Apr 26, 2024
To keep people posted: Jota and JoDeen will be in charge of picking the themes. Thank you to both of them!
#787: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on May 17, 2024
I propose a topic to be reflected or mirrored images. This is inspired by Puzzle # 6310, and my comment.
#788: Spot (Pspaughtamus) on May 27, 2024
I see that the WCP is still happening, but where are the topics/themes posted?
#789: Jota (jota) on May 27, 2024
On the left, Honors tab.
#790: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jun 22, 2024
I'm sitting in for Jota and JoDeen for a couple of weeks. This week's theme is The Longest Day. It's inspired by the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, but there is room for other interpretations.
#791: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jun 28, 2024
This week's theme is "What's hiding in your closet?" The idea was posted by Teresa K, years ago. If you create a puzzle for the challenge, please add "WCP #194" to its title.

Also, I have a question: Teresa wrote in #694 that a theme could be "Bob and Kate (lots of choices here - at home, having a baby, go shopping, out on the town, 2nd honeymoon - I miss those guys)."

I am wondering whether Bob and Kate were regular webpbn characters at some point, or if they are from a TV show or book, or if Teresa invented them for the weekly challenge?
#792: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jul 4, 2024
