Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio on June 7, 1917. He was host of the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts that began in 1974 and continued into the 80s.

Lots of trivia for Dino:

Even though he was born in Ohio, he only spoke Italian until he was 5 years old.

At the age of 15, he was a boxer who billed himself as "Kid Crochet". Of his twelve bouts, he would later say "I won all but eleven." He actually fought 36 times, and won 25 of those fights.

When he gave up boxing and started his singing career, he billed himself as "Dino Martini" (after opera singer Nino Martini).

He had a fear of elevators and a love of comic books, which he read his entire life.

He was the father-in-law of the late Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys (married to Dean's daughter Gina).

He had vanity license plates that said "DRUNKY" but in spite of having a reputation as a heavy drinker, he was often the first to call it a night, and chose to spend lots of time at home with his family.

Although he made out to be a heavy drinker on stage, he mostly used apple juice, but off stage was a Jack Daniels man.

His lifestyle of drinking and smoking led to failure of his liver, kidneys, and lungs. He died of respiratory failure on Christmas Day at the age of 78.

I hated the drinking and smoking, but I loved the man. Such charm and wit. And on that voice! Ahhhhhh. :-)
