Puzzle Description:
African symbols for and independence and vigilance.
#1: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jan 25, 2010 [SPOILER]
On the left is the Fawodhodie, to signify freedom and emancipation. The African expression is "Fawodhodie ene obre na enam." Literal translation: "Independence comes with its responsibilities."#2: Jane Doe (telly) on Jan 25, 2010
On the right is "Akoben" which is a war horn to sound a battle cry.
As a pacifist, I hate war. But I also understand that freedom needs to be protected with a sound defense. I am very sad for the civil wars in Africa, for the violence that has erupted in Haiti after the earthquake, and the domestic violence that silently (and not silently) is carried out behind closed doors in our "civilized" society.
I totally agree.#3: sanane samanye (maceraseven) on Jan 25, 2010

Thanks for the links, Sanane. I didn't know about the Stabilization Mission in Haiti. That is a sad, long list.#6: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jan 25, 2010
I am sorry for all wars that are fought unnecessarily or for the wrong reasons. I have never experienced battle personally, not in war, and not in domestic violence, but I have friends who fought in Viet Nam who came back with a piece of their souls missing that they cannot get back, and I have friends who experienced serious abuse as children who have a hole in their heart that can never be fixed. Both experiences cause permanent damage that should never happen.
I am grateful that I never had to serve my country in a way that would compromise my principles (I served 20 years as a volunteer instead). I am grateful that I grew up with loving and nurturing parents with all my basic needs met. And I am grateful that I live in the U.S. where I have had the resources to foster/adopt the children nobody else wanted. I just wish I had more resources to help more kids, at home in our own community and in Haiti. What I can do is make donations so others can provided what is needed. I hope others will commit to help as well.
Thanks, Telly.#7: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jan 25, 2010
