Hey, I'm just giddy to see people I don't even know entering puzzles here. Cool. Cool. Cool.#2: Mark Conger (aruba) on Sep 7, 2004
Is there a hidden religious message in the picture? :)#3: zandperl (zandperl) on May 24, 2005 [SPOILER]
I *think* sides are as follows:#4: Gypso (Gypso) on Jul 13, 2007 [SPOILER]
Port is red like Port wine.
Port has 4 letters like Left (when facing the front/bow).
Ship is going.
Fun puzzle Megan! Thank you :)#5: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Oct 27, 2008
Thanks also to zandperl for the easy to remember definition of Port :D
Well done - thank you.#6: dogstar (dogstar) on Nov 4, 2008
I enjoyed this puzzle. I always remember that the short words go together and the long words go together,#7: Byrdie (byrdie) on Dec 27, 2008 [SPOILER]
red, left, port
green, right, starboard.
Zandperl is close - port is left (use the four letter trick). However, the trick I learned as a kid when helping my Dad's friends on their fishing boat is "red right returning" so the ship would be coming towards us.#8: jaume pons viscarri (jponsv) on Apr 26, 2009
Nice image and took some effort to solve.
Port is red and stardoard is green, so the boat is going.#9: Kadou (Kadou) on Mar 11, 2012 [SPOILER]
Nice puzzle!#10: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Aug 30, 2021
I had to look it up...
Port is red and on the left of a boat.
Starboard is grenn and the right of a boat.
So, this boat is going away.
What Martin is talking about is a rule of travel direction where the reference is channel's color of "buoys".
Another great little puzzle...and a bit of knowledge to boot!#11: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Aug 31, 2021
"Red right returning" refers not to the boat's running lights, but to the channel markers. So coming into a harbor, or upriver, stay to the left of the red markers (so the marker is on your right).#12: Pam Tucker (grammypam) on Mar 26, 2025
Do you know that the term "posh" was an acronym for "port over starboard home"? The upperclass didn't like to rise early so they wanted state rooms that were not on the sunny side of the ship...thus they wanted the port side on the trip out...and the starboard side on the trip home.
