Puzzle Description:

adding numbers

#1: Kayla Aldridge (KMA61290) on Nov 30, 2009 [HINT]

i used the numbers 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, and 2 and a plus sign

Kayla: You have to work on this to make it solvable without guessing or it cannot be accepted as an entry at the WC.

In reply to #1: You sure did!

I'm gonna say I used edge logic on the 5 pixels in r18 and uzed zig zag logic on the "8" and call this logically solvable, but I'd accept it if I were over-ruled.

Look at row 16. Only one black will be in that entire row. Now look at the two 15 clues in columns 25 and 26. Since either R16C25 or R16C26 has to be a dot, then you know That either R1C25 - R15C25 or R1C26 - R15C26 has to be black. Knowing this lets you use the 11 clues in rows 8 and 9 to fill in more blacks.

Using the same kind of logic look at 15 clues in columns 10 and 11. Since you know either R1C10 - R15C10 or R1C11 - R15C11 will be black, and rows 2-3, 6-10 will only have one more clue left on those rows (you know 2-3, 6-7 is also this way because the logic for columns 25 and 26 told us that). Knowing this you will be able to dot out a lot more cells.

I also used the r18 for edge logic. I also used edge logic in various other places. I still have not finished this one, but I will come back to it later. Fun (challenging) logic so far.

Martin, thanks for the hint. That's just what I needed to get going. Gator, yours was a little complicated for me to follow. I had to guess to finish it.

Kayla, next time you might want to solve your puzzle yourself first before publishing it so you can see if it is solvable without guessing. It's just a suggestion. :-)
#8: ant (agrest272) on Dec 2, 2009 [SPOILER]
grr i really wanted this one to be logically solvable.. using 'gator logic' i was able to get everything logically (i think) except for that darn symmetrical 8. So close and yet so far.
#9: Kayla Aldridge (KMA61290) on Dec 2, 2009
teresa i did go in and try to solve it and it seemed to me like it is solable without guessing but thst might be because i know what it is
#10: Kayla Aldridge (KMA61290) on Dec 2, 2009
if anyone has any ideas of how to make it solvable without guessing please let me know because the only other thing i can think of doing is to add a color to all the white space but then people will be saying i need more white space.
#11: Byrdie (byrdie) on Dec 2, 2009 [HINT] [SPOILER]
The "8" is where I used what we've commonly termed zig-zag logic. The numbers really only go together in the correct pattern.

#13: Kayla Aldridge (KMA61290) on Dec 8, 2009 [HINT]
To make the puzzle easier to solve i changed all white space to red and made a white border around the numbers. I know most people like more white space and only 2 colors but i could not find away to do that people haveing to guess
#14: ant (agrest272) on Dec 8, 2009 [SPOILER]
yea that 8 is a killer.. i feel like you'd have to thicken it up to the point of non-recognition if you wanted it to be solvable. still fun to solve though

I really like the numbers :)

Thank You
#18: Jota (jota) on Dec 13, 2009
You really tried Kayla and that is commendable!
#19: GabrielMyCat (gabrielmycat) on Oct 24, 2010 [HINT] [SPOILER]
I got it, but was wondering if you wanted to try to put the holes in the eight? That might make it even more fun!
