some smile logic needed
#2: Gator (Gator) on Oct 7, 2009 [HINT]
This is a little beyond smile logic. Usually with smile logic, it ends up being a simple contradiction (or edge logic) to see why the smile logic must work. For this one, I looked at column 3. To finish out the 2 clue, I will need to make either R3C3 or R5C3 black. If I make R3C3 black, then R3C1 and R5C3 are dots. Now I have to look ahead some more to see that I would then have to fill in R5C1 which makes row 5 invalid (as R5C3 is already a dot, making it impossible to fill in the 3 clue).

In general, it seems an easier way to look at this would be to apply symmetry to finish this out. It then becomes trivial.

Found to require some guessing by jan.

Symmetry works grand, but I didn't see anything better to logically solve the upper left corner than what Gator describes, which is more look-ahead than we want to see in a "logically solvable" puzzle, I think.

Well, the new version is quite easy.
