Wow, a surprisingly artistic first puzzle! I appreciate all first puzzles that are more than just a pattern or design. This one is extra-nice.

How do you start making puzzles? I want to learn.

This site and other sites have guides on solving and designing puzzles. If you haven't done so yet, I would check out the FAQ for design tips.

I can only give you advice from my experience, but I would say the first step would involve making sure you have a good grasp on how the logic works. You start to get a better grasp of this the more puzzles that you do.

Also, the "Check" button on the design screen is really helpful as it will tell you if your puzzle design can be solved by logic alone, has a unique solution but may or may not be solvable, or has multiple solutions. Try to avoid multiple solutions puzzles as they cannot be logically solved.

I also will play through my puzzles on average about 20 times making changes as I go until the puzzle is solvable and is fun to solve. When you play through the same puzzle many times, you start to notice particular logic elements that make up that particular puzzle. The more you do this, the easier it gets.

Vicki, I believe the first step is to solve lots and lots of puzzles first. You have already done that, so you know what is makes a puzzle fun to solve. Besides the article Jan wrote that is linked on the puzzle creation page, there is a Forum topic that asked users to share what they think makes a good puzzle. It is Topic #6. I look forward to your puzzles. :-)

What an evolution.

I seem to have gone the other way. My first puzzle is one that I think is really neat looking but I still haven't been able to complete solving it myself so that I can figure out how to fix it. My puzzles since then have been decidedly simpler. I have a couple gems in there but I'm no Michaelangelo (or Gator).

Gator, bet those were fun days :-)

Okay. I'm missing something. (Not unusual.) Is that the sun in the left corner (including the 3 dots)? What is that other thing?

Mine was a lot simpler... symbol for "pi".

Your first but definitely not your last. Good to read the advice, too. I think it may help people who haven't made a puzzle in a while but want to get back into it.

For my first puzzle I found something I was pretty sure had never been done before. (We can check with a google search of, say "site:webpbn.com mario".) As much as I love wordplay and a well-done image, I'm constantly interested in seeing how people share their own slices of life that might be a bit old hat to them, but it's new to me.

And yes we can practice classic/basic images.
