Being my usual over-analytic self, I'm wondering what specific Obama policies are being associated with communism here. Certainly there is the near nationalization of several large financial institutions and auto companies. A capitalist purist would have let those companies just fail, but I can't say I can imagine John McCain or the Republican party having done so. Plus there is every indication that this government intervention is going to be as temporary as anyone can make it.

There is likely to be an increase in the reversal of the long phase of deregulation of the financial companies, but I can't believe that any but the most maniacal pro-capitalists would be arguing against that just now.

The economic stimulus package is a big burst of government spending, putting lots of unemployed people temporarily to work for the government. Maybe that has communistic overtones ... but are you against it? The Republican counter proposal was he same, but with more tax cuts.

Of course, we never really hated the Soviets because they believed in the nationalization of the means of production, but because they were a totalitarian government. So maybe this shirt represents a belief that Obama is moving us toward totalitarianism. But I'm a little confused as to what policies might make you think that. Reduction of domestic spying on US citizens? Shutting down secret prisons where people can be held without trial?

It's worth remembering that the Russian revolution was the overthrow of a hereditary dictatorial monarchy by common workers. (Surely this shirt can't be about the overthrow of the Bush dynasty?) The winners chose their emblem of a hammer and sickle are the symbols of the factory worker and the field worker, combined in opposition to rule by the hereditary aristocracy. As a symbol honoring the working man over the parasitical rich, it's actually something that many Americans might have chosen as a symbol between 1760 and 1800 when they were inventing a new culture that honored work over heredity status. Of course, the Russian revolution didn't work out too well, setting up a new totalitarian government and a new elite, but many dreams die that way. It's worth remembering the original dream as well as the eventual outcome.

Or maybe someone just merged the symbols of two things they hate without actually knowing much of anything about either one. If Obama's symbol had been square, they'd have used a swastika and been just as happy about it.

Makes a nice puzzle though. Thanks.

Nicely said, Jan.

I am one of those pure capitalists who would have liked to have seen said companies/banks reap the pure capitalistic ends of their greed and short-sightedness. This would probably have been to my detriment if the Republican "trickle down" theory/effect of the (kaff kaff) Regan era actually worked. Sigh. It would be interesting (and predictable) luck that it would finally kick in now. However, since it is not to happen, that scenario will not occur...so we shall never know.

Obama cannot afford widespread financial distress with its repercussions. Not the stuff of his rhetoric.

Here's to Obama! His are at least better than the Bush administration's policies. He was not my choice, but he's entertaining to watch...and, make no mistake, not stupid. As Kennedy was, he is wet behind the ears...and impatient. We shall see if, as his ears dry, his political savvy (and political compromise/maneuvering) keep pace.
#12: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jun 19, 2009 [SPOILER]
Well, so far he's avoided increasing the size of any of America's many incredible messes. I can live with that. Caution is better than stupidity. But it isn't greatness. We'll see.

Nice logo, but if Obama fails at basic socialism how can he even be close to a communist :P
#14: GabrielMyCat (gabrielmycat) on Oct 30, 2010 [HINT] [SPOILER]
I am not a proponent of Obama nor socialism nor total(whateverism **ism is out there), But, have we had really enough time to see what the result would be of any of the policies or changes that have been adopted by our current regime. I believe regime is the right word, but someone correct me if I am wrong... I am not a fan of the policies and programs of our current regime, but geez... Aren't they all corrupt, crooked, out-for-themselves politicians? Look at what Bush and that congress did to the economy in the first place!!! We need a revolution of sorts in order to get rid of the current and past crooks' policies and laws? AND, whatever happened to one man one vote? We don't really have that anymore, do we?

rantings from a state that has the 2 most horrid choices for a senate seat in history and no recourse to correct it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW - I like the logo and the puzzle!
#15: Amanda Egeskov Hald (Minimanta) on Apr 30, 2014 [SPOILER]
Lol, this is funny to me. Because Obama didn't turn out to be a communist, far far from it. He's not even remotely close to be a socialist, let alone liberal. At least not by Scandinavian standards.
