I'm happy to read your description; because before that, I thought there was a fire or something!!! And after a long, harsh winter, it is definitely time to get outside!!!#2: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Mar 9, 2009

JoDeen it couldn't be "as the mother" because that would be 24/7!. This is my kind of exercise. The reason my husband finally relented to getting a dog was that when we took care of my brothers dog I went out every day, so I now I take my own out everyday! I love her! Thanks for the puzzle!#12: Teresa K (fasstar) on Mar 10, 2009 [SPOILER]

Yes Adam, I am the person inside the atm who slides out your money for you.#14: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Mar 10, 2009
Not.
atm = at the moment. I thought that was common knowledge lol!
Is there any more abbreviations you need me to explain?
btw? wtf? irl? tmi? fil? sil? bil? mil? w/o? ryn? bbl? ttyl?
I hardly ever use anything but abbreviations for those.
And then we have the laughs... lol, rofl, lmao, roflmao
atm, I'm rofl, btw.
Yes, Petra:#15: Petra Lassen (stjarna) on Mar 10, 2009
IRL
FIL
SIL
BIL (billion?)
MIL (million?)
RYN
BBL
I don't do any of the text messaging, internet chat room stuff, and so I have never seen some of these abbreviations. Sorry for not being so UTD. lol
Feel free to throw out even more!
IRL: In Real Life#16: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Mar 10, 2009
FIL: Father In Law
SIL: Sister In Law
BIL: Brother In Law
MIL: Mother In Law
RYN: Regarding Your Note
BBL: (I'll) Be Back Later
Most of them I have from online diary writing. I've kept an online diary for over six years.
Thanks; good to know#17: Jota (jota) on Mar 10, 2009
I don't want winter to end! So many things to do out there!#18: Steve Johnson (swjohnson12) on Mar 10, 2009
Adam, If you want a fairly complete list of internet abbreviations check ou this site:#19: Jan Wolter (jan) on Mar 11, 2009

All these abbreviations kind of make me sad.#20: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Mar 11, 2009 [SPOILER]
I think they all started in chat rooms. I was a user of one of the first chat rooms, back in the early 1980's. Some of us (we called ourselves the "key clique") got into a mode of chatting that involved typing complete sentences extremely fast. If you were really into it you never stopped typing. You typed while you read, typed ahead of net lag, trying to keep witty and relevant in a rapidly shifting conversational flow, riffing off each other. Surfing on a churning sea of language. It was huge fun while it lasted.
I'm afraid we didn't have a lot of respect for people who would stumble in, ask "M or F?" and then be unable to think of one other thing to say. Abbreviations? We didn't need no steenking abbreviations. What, you gotta pee so bad you can't type "I'll be back in a few minutes"? Or better: "Gotta go pee."
The language is beautiful and expressive and fun to play with. The whole idea that the English language is inadequate to express emotions without emoticons is pathetic. But the lazy writers won, and this lame crud is now supposed to be the gold standard of Internet writing. Foo.
So anyway, I still don't use that stuff, and I commend all of those who remain ignorant of the meanings of all these things.

And handwriting. I was struck last night how quaint handwriten recipes were and wondered how long it had been since I got one or sent one.#22: Steve Johnson (swjohnson12) on Mar 12, 2009
I HATE LOL the absolute mostest of all abbreviations. It is used WAY too much and most of the time used in the wrong sense.#23: Shae (shaekin) on Mar 13, 2009
I don't see why you have to remain ignorant of the abbreviations as long as you don't use them. Being ignorant of something you don't like is like putting your head in the sand. “Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.” (Sun Tzu quote)
I use the abreviations when I text a lot because you're only allowed 160 charactors if you're texting someone not in my network. And I tend to be wordy. And I admit I use lol a lot because when sending a text it lets the person know the text is supposed to be lighthearted. A must when you're sarcastic. If I'm at a computer and typing though I normally type out everything.#24: Meg Smith (Mamadragonfreak) on Jun 5, 2009 [HINT]

I do dancing myself.
great puzzle - i walk my golden retrievers!#28: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Feb 18, 2011
Texting has become so pervasive that kids today have forgotten how to write whole words anymore. U No?#29: Susan (Susan) on Jun 8, 2017
It's morbidly amusing when people mistake LOL for Lots of Love, as in "I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother's passing. LOL"
They stopped teaching cursive handwriting in schools where I live. Toddlers will be texting soon, I'm sure they'll love the abbreviations.#30: Rissa Moore (rissawise) on Sep 18, 2023
I go walking in the amazing parks nearby, but it's hardly serious exercise as I always carry a DSLR camera and stop for lots of photos. Gardening a bit lately too, but need something more vigorous. Thanks for the push, Teresa, and for an enjoyable puzzle too.
Another amazing picture - kept me guessing until the last pixel! Thank you for all your lovely 20x20 puzzles I can do on my tiny laptop. Very satisfying.
