Puzzle Description:
Our village school was burnt down the night between January 5 and 6. Sadly, that's what our village is now most famous for.

That is very sad for the new year. ! pray no one was hurt since it was at night. Will you be able to rebuild? How many children went to classes there? Please accept my regrets for this difficult time.#2: Jota (jota) on Jan 20, 2009
It seems wrong to say "Thank you" for a sad puzzle, but you did a good job.
Petra where was that? What's being done? Can I help?#3: Petra Lassen (Stjarna) on Jan 20, 2009 [SPOILER]
No one was hurt, first of all. All the children were still on winter break.#4: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jan 20, 2009 [SPOILER]
The school was set on fire by accident (sort of) by a 13 y/o boy playing with fireworks. He managed to set fire to the school green house, which set fire to the roof. With the roof on fire, the ceilings broke and the classrooms were set on fire too. 40% of the school is completely gone, literally. They scraped the remains of it off the ground.
Most of the kids go to school in the nearest town now. The youngest have moved into a new preschool instead. In the end of February, they will have put up 27 barracks on the soccer field next to the school where kids will go to school for 14 to 18 months before the school is rebuilt.
My two girls both went to this school, they're 12 and 13 years old.
And where we live? In southern Sweden.
Petra, I'm so sorry about your school. The image is very well done, I think.#5: wendy herndon (wendyherndon) on Jan 20, 2009
Before I read the comments, I looked up St. Jarna to see if that was your city. Discovered that stjarna is the Swedish word for star. Nice nickname. It is also the title of a song by Depeche Mode, lovely and sad, like your puzzle.

How sad for the families. So sorry to hear this.#6: Jota (jota) on Jan 20, 2009
I'm glad to know no one was hurt! Also, since this happened in a developed country, it's good to know that it will be rebuilt.#7: Petra Lassen (stjarna) on Jan 20, 2009
I will never understand the fascination people have for handling fireworks.
LOL I chose my online name because of the Depeche Mode song. I love the song (which is intrumental, it's a single b-side) and I thought it was great that they chose as Swedish word for their song title.#8: Beth (Shasta) on Jan 21, 2009
very sad. I am glad it was an accident from a child rather than senseless or purposeful adult violence. Thank you.#9: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jan 21, 2009
I bet lots of the children were happy. I HATED school when I was 12-13. :-) Nice puzzle.#10: Synthia McBride (synthia) on Aug 20, 2022 [SPOILER]
It is now 13 years later. I hope the school has been re-built and the you and your village are doing well.#11: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Sep 28, 2022 [SPOILER]
I had this puzzle in my partially-solved cache for quite some time. It's a beautiful rendering of a tragic event. The fire solve was tricky, but such a great rendering.
