When I had to read aloud in class, the first time I ever saw the word island, I pronounced it is-land. I remember everyone laughing at me. This word still rubs me the wrong way. What's up with that silent S anyway?

I remember pronouncing it that way in my head reading it as a kid. I think it clicked before I had to read it out loud though.

To this day I still say it that way in my head when I am writing it to get the correct spelling.

(Singing) "IS land is your land, IS land is my land ..."

An easy one to forgive, Jo. Meanwhile, I still fumble it when I tell people I'm from "Lawn Guyland." :D

I wonder how many of us said mis-chee-vee-e-us. Or ate sal-mon or all-monds.
