I always wanted to learn guitar, but my mother wouldn't hear of it. She was afraid I'd be a long-haired hippie folk singer. I told her no, I wanted to learn classical guitar. I lied! I wanted to be a long-haired hippie folk singer.
Nice colorful picture, by the way.

No I really think I'm too old to be a long-haired hippie. But I could still learn guitar. My husband has been talking about taking up drums, so we could really drive the neighbors crazy!

I play piano and organ. I have tried guitar and harp several times, but I could never develop the callouses. Anyone have some advice? If it matters, I am in the "never too old" group. I am long-haired, so I could probably do the hippie thing. Sounds groovy!

If you have trouble building callouses, try nylon strings. Practice for a shorter period time and increase slowly over weeks. You wouldn't need callouses on your picking fingers; you could wear metal picks, hold a single pick to strum.
For your left hand, you could try to transpose the music so you use a full finger across all or most strings (for example, the F chord requires this, and since that was hard for me, I transposed songs that had F chords to easier ones.
