James, while John had had "had had", had had "had had had", had had a better effect on the teacher.
To word it differently, John had had "had had", presumably on his paper. Meanwhile James had had "had had had". Therefore, his wording had had a better effect on the teacher.
At least I think. I don't know, working it out so much has me feeling like "had" isn't even a word anymore. You know when you say the same word too many times, that can happen?
James, while John had had "had", had had "had had". "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher#3: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Oct 14, 2021 [SPOILER]
Aurelian: Yes! I completely lost any sense of the word "buffalo" in the sentence for the other puzzle. It turned into just a stream of syllables with no meaning.#4: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Oct 14, 2021
I didn't even try with that one. But I liked BT's punctuation in comment #2. I hadn't thought of splitting it into two sentences, but reading it that way was rather clear.#5: David R. Felton (drfelton) on Oct 15, 2021
I agree with Aurelian.#6: Yonah Kondor (yokon965) on Oct 15, 2021 [SPOILER]
I traditionally go with either BT's #2 or the alternate variation in which James had "had had", leaving "had" for John. Just a few quotation marks move around to change who had had how many hads.#7: CB Paul (cbpaul) on Oct 15, 2021
Hadn't thought about the "had had had" theory AG proposes in #1, but it brought me to a new silly option: James had a better effect on the teacher, because John had "had had had had had had had had had," which surely the teacher thought strange of him to have had!
(James, while John had "had had had had had had had had had," had a better effect on the teacher.)
Way to wake me up! Now I get to edit legal writing. sigh.#8: Ailsa Hebert (bazette3) on Oct 15, 2021
