The description is a clue to the subject using cryptic crossword clue rules. This one doesn't tell you the length of the answer since the picture gives you an additional clue.

Every cryptic clue is made up of two parts; a definition, and a literal description of the answer using wordplay. They can be in either order (though not intertwined).

Here is a page describing some of the techniques:

OOH! I love cryptic crosswords. This puzzle was so fun and then solving the clue was great fun, too. Thank you. Keep them coming!

For lovers of cryptics, the Washington Post has free access to their puzzles. There's a daily "easy" cryptic and a collection of harder ones. Lots of crosswords, too, of varying difficulty. The cryptics are British, so I wish I knew more about English towns and football teams.

I was thinking, "Sodium chloride minus CL is 'sodium oride.' I don't see it." But Belita did!

This puzzle hits all the marks. A fun blotted puzzle with an ah ha moment at the end and a tricky but doable cryptic to boot.

... something something something A-SALT! :)

Belita: why would NA not be able in NA?

Just loved this!

Belita got it!

For cryptic learners, the breakdown is:

This is a double-definition.

Not available (definition - n/a)
in (link)
the US, Canada, and Mexico (definition - North America = NA)

The picture is a salt shaker. And NaCl - Cl = Na

This is the only one of these cryptic puzzles I've figured out and actually understood so far. Hoping that means I'm grasping the concept and will get more of them in the future.

Fun pbn solve too.

Very cool. I kept thinking, "Sodium?" What's it about Sodium? Then it hit.
