Every cryptic clue is made up of two parts; a definition, and a literal description of the answer using wordplay. They can be in either order (though not intertwined).

For lovers of cryptics, the Washington Post has free access to their puzzles. There's a daily "easy" cryptic and a collection of harder ones. Lots of crosswords, too, of varying difficulty.
