This is from a (very 90s) picture of Jan Wolter, maker of this site, from his unixpapa site.

Oh! I am trying to remember what the history was on that image. I remember we started with a photo of Jan and I did something to it and then he posted it, but that was in the 1990s and I don't remember the details anymore. At the time, the idea of being able to share an image on the Internet was still new and cool.

Which brings me to the same question I just asked on another puzzle: I feel like this is something I would already know, but I don't: Why is it Founders' Day today?

Have you seen Jan's World Tour? He made that, too, when putting images on the Internet was still new. Warning: The last stop on the tour is sad:

Aha! Puzzle 30023 says that "W" is the 23rd letter of the alphabet, and that's why today is Founders' Day. "Jan W."

Now I realize why I didn't remember it!

Speaking of "Jan" as an abbreviation for January: I always thought it was neat that Jan's license plate tags expired in January, so they said "JAN" on them.

Valerie, That is a great story. When Jan came up with this site do you think he knew how popular it would get?

I doubt it! And I especially doubt that he ever thought that the site would outlive him.

Yes, it is an excellent site. I marvel at the creativity of coming up with a puzzle site like it. Not to mention the creativity of the artists. This image is awesome and a challenging puzzle as well.

Very unusual image and a very tough puzzle. It took a bit of squinting, but I can now see the unique image. Awesome.
