Aurelian inspired me to look up butterfly in Hebrew - it's pahrpahr (accent on the second "pahr"). In Italian, it's farfalla; hence, farfalle - butterfly-shaped pasta. Now that I look at them, I think the words in the two languages are probably related, as "p" and "f" are represented by the same letter in Hebrew. No idea who named the fluttering things first.
Now I'm off on a hunt. The Arabic for butterfly is farasha, so also related. The Greek is totally different, however, as is the Turkish. The Latin papilio is the origin for many European words for butterfly, but there may be some even older root involving the letter p/f.#11: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 17, 2020 [SPOILER]

00111 of them? I get either 00101 or 01001, depending on whether you count the blue things.#14: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jul 22, 2023
