The description is a clue to the subject using cryptic crossword clue rules.

Every cryptic clue is made up of two parts; a definition, and a literal description of the answer using wordplay. They can be in either order (though not intertwined) and there is no separation between them.

Here is a page describing some of the techniques:

After careful color logic and line logic gets all the blue leaving only some black in the upper right,

Edge logic 3 c16 = r1-7, r12 white
LL
EL 2 c25 = r11-12 w
Then repeat for the 2s in c24 down to c18
LL to finish

Not sure how much use that umbrella will be here today - they don't usually do well in freezing rain. Fun mix of 2 puzzles.

Must be a Rumbrella! (I even waited a day before solving this one. No other guesses??)

The answer is umbrella. This is an anagram clue.
Here's the breakdown of the clue:

All-encompassing (this is the definition)
rum label redesign (anagram of "rumlabel")

I wasn't here in time for a guess, but I LOVE the concept, this was a lot of fun!

That first black 3 in the 16th column was the key to getting the black diagonal.

I was trying various rum labels, but the letters didn't add up ("bacardi" is only seven). Who'd a thought "rumlabel?"

You know Kristen got it!
