Puzzle Description:

Hickory Dickory Dock. The thing on the side of the clock is a mouse. The blue is the shadow.

Thank you for a new series to look forward to! I like the clock, and the little mouse. Good job!
#2: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jun 9, 2008
I agree. It was very well done.
#3: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 10, 2008
I totally figured everything out without the description-- very recognizable! Good puzzle!
#4: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Jun 13, 2008
can someone please write the full rhyme for those of us how havent grown up with it
#5: Deana L (ffswife) on Jun 13, 2008 [SPOILER]
This is from memory so forgive me if I miss something...

Hickory Dickory Dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one
The mouse ran down
Hickory Dickory Dock.

I believe that there's a rhyme for the clock striking each hour, but striking one is the prevailing one everyone knows... and most people don't even KNOW there are more verses. :)

Ok, I went and looked. There IS a long version...

You can see it here:

thanks Deana
#8: Jen (lightvader) on Jun 13, 2008
Count me as one of the people who didn't know there was more to it.
#9: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 13, 2008 [SPOILER]
Ooo, I like the long version.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but the way I learned it is

The clock struck one
And down he run

Completely grammatically incorrect, but it makes a perfect rhyme in Oklahoma where one is pronounced "wun."
#10: Deana L (ffswife) on Jun 13, 2008
Actually, if you look on the wiki page, it mentions that version as well, so you shouldn't be embarassed at all. :)
#11: Jen (lightvader) on Jun 13, 2008
I think that's the way I learned it too! I couldn't figure out why it didn't seem quite right before.
#12: Jane Doe (telly) on Jun 13, 2008
I too didn't know there were more verses...lol. I went to that website (thanks Deanna) and was overwhelmed by how long the actual rhyme is...I liked the parodies at the end...I've heard a few of them. :)
#13: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 14, 2008
It's good to have some regionality to our nursury rhymes.

It reminds me of a joke: At Christmastime some passersby in a Southern town noticed a nativity scene set up at the church. It included the baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, etc... but the odd thing was what appeared to be three firefighers included in the scene. So, the visitors asked a local about the odd nativity. The local responded, "Don't you read your Bible? It says three wise men came from afar?"

LOL...lol..

It might be good to mention that for a southerner in the U.S. "afar" is how they say "a fire".
#16: Jen (lightvader) on Jun 15, 2008
Thanks for mentioning that.
#17: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 16, 2008
Thanks!
#18: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Jun 19, 2008 [SPOILER]
Good puzzle, fun to do, plus I love these comments, hehe, "afar" love it! It's winter here now and I wish I had afar going in my house :)
#19: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jun 19, 2008
Marz, you can come visit me..we are expecting temps between 95-100 today

OOh nice, well actually, I am a big whinger, it is going to be be about 18c tomorrow, hopefully, which works out to be about 65f, which is quite nice really. It is 59 now and midnight, I don't even need a heater on. We have got rain right now, so the cloud cover keeps it warmer, we have always got rain lately, the drought is certainly over, our dams are filling back up. Gosh I blabber on around midnight, better go to bed, enjoy your lovely weather Naneki :)
#21: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jun 19, 2008 [HINT]
I learned it as "down he run" as well. Hey Marz, what is a "whinger?" (Did you mean whiner?)
#22: Deana L (FFsWife) on Jun 19, 2008
Marz is Austrailian... same word, different spelling.
#23: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Jun 19, 2008
Yeah, what Deana said, thanks Mate! :)
#24: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jun 20, 2008
Right. That is very valuable information to know. :-)
#25: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on May 24, 2013 [SPOILER]
The wikipedia page has had some serious trimming since this was written. The long version is gone along with a lot of parody versions. Here's a link to the page that was referred to: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hickory_Dickory_Dock&oldid=213299764#Long_Version
#26: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jan 13, 2020
Thanks, Joe! I wondered where to find the longer version. I also adore the French "version."

It is so totally wonderful to solve a puzzle from years ago and read the ensuing comments over the years!
