Puzzle Description:
A Thistle. "In the language of flowers, the thistle (like the burr) is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields punishment. For this reason the thistle is the symbol of the Order of the Thistle, a high chivalric order of Scotland. Another story is that a Viking attacker stepped on one at night and cried out, so alerting the defenders of a Scottish castle. Whatever the justification, the national flower of Scotland is the thistle." (from Wikipedia)

I had to peek to get the very bottom row in place, and then I enjoyed it. Interesting info. Thanks!#3: Meg Tayler (rebelcat) on Jun 4, 2008 [HINT]

I too had to use edge logic. That's interesting info on the thistle. My neighbor is obsessed with purple. All of her children (three girls and a boy) have "purple" names. The boy's is Thistle. Interesting.#6: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jun 4, 2008
How do you use the "helper" feature? It never appears on my puzzle screen until I have already solved it. Any help out there?#7: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 5, 2008
When you CREATE a puzzle you can (and SHOULD) use the helper before you publish it. It solves basic line-by-line logic but doesn't check for edge logic or color logic. And I've seen a few places where it didn't check for line-by-line logic completely. If the helper can solve a puzzle with just a bit of edge or color logic help from me, then I will publish it. Of course, if it can solve the whole thing, then the progam doesn't leave it up to raters to determine if it's logical or not-- it's just labeled logical automatically.#8: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 5, 2008 [SPOILER]
Jane-- Violet, I'm sure, and Lavendar? Grape? Thistle is a bit of an odd name! But I've seen odder!#9: Gypso (Gypso) on Jun 5, 2008
How about Hyacinth?#10: Jane Doe (telly) on Jun 9, 2008
Beautiful puzzle Arduinna! Absolutely gorgeous. :)
Interesting back story too.
Very fun puzzle. Thank you!
Yes, Violet and Lavendar... the third is Lilac.#11: Gypso (Gypso) on Jun 11, 2008
Ah, Lilac! The missing name sounds pretty normal to me. :)#12: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 12, 2008
Better than Grape! LOL!#13: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Jun 13, 2008
I agre but Id still rather be called violet or lavendar then Lilac.#14: Gypso (Gypso) on Jun 15, 2008 [SPOILER]
Great puzzle arduinna loved it
I wonder how the "purple names" would be shortened with time. I know a Vi. Would Lavender become Lav? Or Lilac be Lil?#15: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jun 16, 2008
Hopefully not Vender or Lac!#16: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz) on Jun 16, 2008
Nice challenging puzzle and lovely imagage, thanks Arduinna, fun! :)#17: Jane Doe (telly) on Jun 29, 2008 [SPOILER]
I know that Thistle's dad calls his son "David" which I believe is his middle name...I don't think he cares for his son's first name much. lol#18: Mary Thomas (marleethom) on Apr 26, 2009 [SPOILER]
Enjoyed this puzzle. Recognized the plant.#19: Jota (jota) on May 11, 2009
