Most of the puzzle is easy, but the lower right corner is a bit tricky.
#2: Mark Conger (aruba) on Apr 6, 2004
I found this one pretty hard. Twice I had to try some moves and reach a contradiction, then hit undo a bunch of times to get back.
#3: theo van emmen (theo) on Dec 21, 2004
pretty hard
#4: zandperl (zandperl) on May 24, 2005 [HINT]
The guessing in the lower right isn't too bad.

This puzzle is definitely solvable without guessing. The key is the 5 on the bottom row and the bottom numbers of the 7th and 8th columns from the right. Since the 5 can't cross both of these columns (it would put a block of 2 in the 3rd row which only has 1s), the 5 has to be somewhere to the left. The rest of that corner should fall into place after that.
#7: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jul 2, 2007 [HINT]
Belatedly coming back to this, I've decided that Robert was, as usual, right. Those two columns clearly cannot be be used by either the 5 or the 3 in the bottom row, forcing the five off to one side and the three off to the other. That leads to a solution of the whole rest of the puzzle.
#8: Gypso (Gypso) on Aug 4, 2007
It's definitely solvable, but it sure was tricky at the bottom right. Thanks Jan.
#9: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 18, 2008 [HINT]
Robert was dead right about the bottom right corner. The middle 5 (from the bottom row) is easily placed to the left side of the 7th/8th colums from the right. Then it solves easily with edge logic on the 3 in the very bottom row.

Very fun puzzle.

I miss Robert :(
#11: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 20, 2008
Sorry... apparently I am not as big of a fan. :-(
#12: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Dec 24, 2008
Didn't find it that difficult. Must have been having a good night.
#13: Byrdie (byrdie) on Sep 15, 2009
Tricky litte puzzle to solve. Since both red and blue are available as colors, is there a reason you didn't do this in color? Was it to increase the difficulty?
#14: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 15, 2009
I don't think blue was available on this site at the time I did this puzzle. But anyway, I like black and white better.
#15: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Sep 15, 2009
Ditto #14.
#16: Claudia DeVuono (cdevuono) on Dec 17, 2009
Too easy and much too insulting. Sorry, Jan, but you could use a little more tact.

#20: lynn burgess (linnynoeyebrows) on Nov 14, 2010
how stupid to put $ instead of stars.
#21: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 14, 2010
Hey "linny," why do you have "no eyebrows?"
Did you: pluck them?
shave them?
wax them?
have laser hair removal?
Or did they fall out naturally (hypothyroidism, chemo, etc)?
#22: Byrdie (byrdie) on Nov 15, 2010
Methinks I can guess lynn's political bent ...

I agree with 25.
#27: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Aug 6, 2012 [HINT]
you'd think i would have tried the EL first, but no. after LL, whether C21R18 or C21R21 are black, C20R18 is black. Line logic from there.

no comment on the political debate.
#28: Greggo (Greggo) on May 11, 2018
Good puzzle, more accurate today then when it was first made!
#29: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Jul 28, 2019
Jan, you made my day today...even after all these years and from the other side of the sun.

If Jan thought GWB was bad he wouldn't even believe what we've got now. Oh well.

RIP Jan. The rest of us have to wait awhile. At least we've got puzzles in the meantime.

tongue-in-cheek...I thought the $$$ were appropriate for the GOP!
