Neat puzzle! But what's a grue?

This is from a popular computer game called Zork from 1980. It is a "text adventure" where the computer gives a description of a room and the items within, and you type in the actions you would take, such as "turn on the lantern" or "stab the troll with the rusty dagger". Very early in the game you find the depicted trap door that leads down to a huge underground world where 99% of the game takes place. Any time you go into a dark area without light, instead of a description of the room it just gives the "it is pitch black..." line and you will die within a few turns by being eaten by a grue so you'd better either get your lantern or torch on quickly, or hurry back to a lit room or area!

I remember those text games. I was forever getting lost in never never land, wandering hopelessly until I had to give up and start over.

I loved text adventures. Zork and HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy were my two favorites

I never played Zork, but my husband did. I'd heard the "You are likely to be eaten by a grue" line before. :)

When I was young, we had a TI 99-4A, and Camel was the cool game that we played. It was a cartridge that plugged into the computer and was a text-only game, very similar to Oregon Trail. You had to get your camel to the oasis before you died in the desert.

Do you remember that one key that could cause you to stomp around the room screaming obscenities because if you accidently touched this key it would delete everything! I remember one of the guys I worked with went down to the machine shop and had them build a little metal tent for that dreaded key.
