I really enjoyed this one. I think this puzzle is a good example of how subjective the difficulty rating can be. Of course we all have our own internal scales and criteria - that’s not what I mean. I mean do you take take the easiest solution or not. There appeared to be some easy EL on this one but it was rated LL only so I solved it that way. Easiest solution - the avg rating here is probably pretty accurate. Solving with LL only, I thought it was a lot trickier. Either that or I could have just been having troubles finding an obvious next move - that happens. But the point is that sometimes sticking with LL does make it a harder solve than using moderate look-ahead.

Thanks Valerie. Exactly how you described it. This kind of logic has been difficult for me to spot. Understanding it when pointed out is easy. Spotting it has been hard, but I think I’m getting better. You helped me with one 2-4 months ago and I appreciate that. When I see a puzzle is rated LL only, I really try to solve it with LL, even when EL or some other look-ahead would be much easier.

I do that too!

Asking everybody: Would "either way logic" be a good name for that type of logic? Or is it too general a name, and too similar to "two-way logic"? Other ideas for a name for it would be welcome.
#26: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Oct 4, 2026
I think it's fine to keep it as LL. It *can* be solved that way, but that doesn't mean it's the easiest way. Folks can choose whether they want to make it more challenging for themselves. ^_^

I agree. But also I'm looking to give a name to that particular type of line logic, because I don't think it has one and it would be useful to have a way to talk about it.
