yes he is hanging from a tree. that 90 degree pose is classic of nuthatches. they feed on bugs in bark and will work their way up, down and around trees looking for food. they make adorable little honking sounds and are easily found in parks and forests in Alberta.#4: jewel crown (Jewel) on Feb 16, 2017

I love these tree-clinging birds. :)
Until I'd finished, I thought it was going to be a flagpole (flagpole "sitta", since flagpole-sitting was a craze in the 1920s).
